This is something I was wondering for years before discovering this, backed up in real life and by the information provided by CAPS.
All E39A VR4's have the SAME cams as what are in the Evo 2/3(CE9A).

Evo 1(CD9A) Has the same cams as the RVR SSG(N23WG) And Chariot GT(N43W)
Ex:MD193148
In:MD193147 alt MD337759
It's my theory that they re-did the cams in the Evo 1 to make up for the extra lag of the 16g over the 14b, but decided the top end gains of the e39a shafts were better anyway, so went back to them with the E2/3.

I have measured a 0.5mm difference in lobe height between Evo 2 and Evo 1 cams which when multiplied by the rocker ratio of 1.75:1, gives the Evo 2 cams almost 0.9mm more valve lift than the Evo 1 items.
