Wastegate yay or nay?

Hey guys I know I may be asking something that might've been asked before but many guys tell me to get a wastegate and some say not to. I'm trying to figure out here if it's worth going that route because the manifold I'm getting from a mate (BMGTZ) is not for a wastegate (still getting it though) does it make much difference?
 
If your turbo has an internal wastegate then there is no real point in going to an external. The only advantage would be the ability to run variable spring pressures, but even then considering you'll be likely running above standard boost rather than below standard boost it is pointless. You'll also need to weld up the wastegate flap on your current turbo basically just for the wank of having a blingy external gate.

If your manifold doesn't currently have an external wastegate hooked up then you've obviously got an internally gated turbo.

Leave it as is.

The external will allow more exhaust gas to bypass the turbine, they are a better option if using lots and lots more boost and rpm than standard and you want to avoid boost creep.
Some people swear by them, but as VIN has pointed out if yours is internally gated then leave it, if you find you are getting boost creep, you may be able to port the wastgate opening bigger.
External wastegates can be great, but are HUGE, most of the time not worth it.
Better to spend your money on electronic boost controller if you don't already have one.
 
Disagree with above. No Electronic Boost controller will cure boost creeping due to inadequate internal wastegate size/flow control. Something as simple as the increase in turbine flow from a 3" exhaust added onto the back of a TD05H will often cause it to no longer be able to keep up.

If your factory internal wastegate is failing to divert enough gas from the turbine wheel once you have reached your desired boost level either running a boost controller or not, then an external wastegate could be an option to cure it. Externals have the benefit of being larger to be able to bleed off more gas, the diaphragms are larger allowing it to more accurately actuate the valve and finally assuming you have plumbed it back in further down the line, there's an added benefit of not having merging gas flows right next to the turbine wheel in the O2 housing - which improves response due to less turbulence.

I totally agree with this comment! Done right at any boost level a GOOD external will help performance and noticeably increase the turbos response! Dont buy a cheap shit Chinese eBay gate though. Something like a tial 38mm gate would prob be perfect. Here is what Garrett have to say about them.

Speaking from experience here. I went to an external with a td06 on a sw20mr2 that was having issues with spiking and boost creep. Wow what a difference!
 
I certainly wasn't implying that an EBC would solve creep problems, just that IMO spending $ on an external is not necessary till you know absolutely and without doubt that the internal is not flowing adequately which will be evident in creep.


If you have the $ run Ext. because it is better hands down, just buy a good one.

You say your intended manifold from your mate brian has no facilities for a egate. So there is no point buying one.
OR, if you want a egate then buy the correct manifold.

You really need to begin planning your power levels and getting a idea of what you want the car for. Find the guys making the power you want and read their threads. Read the evom and dsmtuner forums. Spend a month in there reading. Galantvr4 as well.
 
Like Jack said, plan your power goals and think about how you want the car to give the power to you. Some like smooth linear power/torque curve all the way through, some like having time to sip coffee before boost catches them unaware and makes the coffee hit the rear window of the car making it look like scene from bukkake film. Everyone has preferences.

Looking at the pipe at the turbine outlet and seeing it going straight and tapering to the final diameter of the exhaust system is awesome.
This is the perfect way to create laminar flow as soon as possible. Most will put a 3" 90 mandrel straight from the housing, but this conical increase in a straight line is the way to go.
That is an insane set up, I'd love to see the other side of it, it's a work of art!
Imagine the sound when those two vent to atmo. I think I need to touch myself for a bit.
 
Pretty sure he means run an rb26 manifold, cut off the flange and weld the 63 flange on the middle 4, then the end 2 cut the pipe lower and weld on gate flange so u run 2 gates :p

rofl. one of the stupidest un-thought out ideas ive ever heard! that stupid id be inclined to use it as an example in a dictionary or thesaurusus to explain why you would refer to somebody as a muppet or a nincompoop!! if there is such a word
