Ive got the engine out at the moment an im trying to remove all the unessential crap while the engine bay is empty, the canister in the pic has been disconnected and bunged with a bolt, i followed the other line an it goes into a hard line to the back of the car and possibly to the fuel tank??

Its located on the drivers side just below the brake booster

What is it?
Thanks

that line thats blocked up should go to the chassi rail. its a vent from the fuel tank. im sure it would be most cars ive tinkered with are the same. when i remove carbon canisteres i always vent that hard line from the fuel tank to the chassi rail.

most cars normaily filter it thro the carbon canister and vent the fuel vapour to atmosphere (chassi rail)

there is a vacumn operated solenoid that connects to it with 2 small vacumn lines that run to 2 ports on the throttle block and the other side of the soloniod runs to the intake by the afm as khubner says.
this system only ensures that petrol vapours in the feul tank are burnt rather than vented to atmosphere. the vapours are only introduced to the intake when there is manifold vacumn and i think only at cruise. you really should leave it as standard as it does add to fuel economy and will not affect power production at all.
if you must get rid of it for whatever reason (weightsaving?) you shouldnt block it off unless you have a vented fuel cap. otherwise you will create a vacumn in the feul tank and may have issues with lack of fuel pressure or even the tank getting sucked in.
maybe just vent it to chassis rail as gaz says

Cheers for that ill have a go at putting it back to standard it was all blocked and disconnected from the previous owner, failing that ill vent it to chassie

venting them to atmo can/will make your car stink of fuel.
not a good option imo
