So the vr4 amg now has these mods for power.

Evo 8 intercooler
tdo5 20g turbo
510cc injectors
pod filter
ported exhaust manifold (i also moded the exhaust housing flapper so it can open all the way)
better cooler piping
3inch exhaust
255wal pump
aftermarket fuel reg

i bolted the 20g on this morning so im wondering what is safe boost to run?

i have a gm maft translator which im unsure of how to use but i also have an safc2 (not wired in yet) however i currently have the stock vr4 airflow meter.

which should i use to get best results and can i tune the car using my data logger and say running the car in 4th gear? also what volt reading is rich and what is lean?

i know there are alot of questions here but i wanna get some balls out of this car for once:w00t:

I was told that with 510cc injectors the 20g starts puching the friendship arround 20psi.

So, I would either run less than 20psi with the 510's or upgrade to 560cc.

the intake pipe has been replaced with 21/2 inch stainless piping, im not sure about whats been done with the ecu, only hearsay that it had been chipped after recieving its big16g and 510 inj. as with everything else that was said about the car im not so sure. however the car did get 640km a tank on the highway and i dont think it would be able to do thiswithout some sort of tune.
i do have a spare 2g maf.
im working on a slight budget here as my daughter was just born a week ago . i have been doing all this work when she is sleeping.
how does this ecmlink work. is it just software that works through the diagnostic port or does it go through the ecu chip. im trying to look up it on the net and it only describes a data log cable and software

If your on a budget how much do you want to spend?

The better way would be ecmlink and a wideband kit. That way you can tune with you afr properly. Ecmlink v3 lite is 345US plus post.
And an Innovate LC1 wideband kit with the digital gauge, your looking around 250US posted off ebay.
You will need a eprom chippable ecu. so open yours up and see if in-fact it has been chipped as it will have the socket and your laughing.

Or if moneys tight you have little time you could just just run say 15psi for a bit, but get a datalogging setup with a palm and the cable. that way at least you watching the injector duty cycles and knock. But you wont know what your afrs are as the stock narrowband sensor tells you nothing useful at full throttle. So maybe put the car on a dyno for some power runs and see where the afr's are at.

Still why bother when the right tuning tools are so cheap now. You just need the time to install the wideband kit ect.
This is a good book to get the basics.... And the ecm link forums are great.

i already have a data logger and cable, my budget atm is about $250 aus maybe a little more in another week or two.

The setup is ready for a tune and some boost by the looks. You have the fuel system, the cooler, turbo ect.....

In the long term
Get rid of the restrictive stock vr4 afm. And put in an 055 or 609. (vr4 or early evo) you said you have a 2g one there.
Either way you choose to tune, safc or ecmlink you going to need a wideband so id get that first. Innovate lc1 works easiest with ecmlink and is a good price so id go that, off american ebay.
The larger afm, wideband, and how you tune would all go in together as a package.

Sell the safc and get a 'ecmlink V3 lite' next. Much better than a safc and the price to upgrade is so worth it. Then you or somone else can tune it safely.

Short term
If you want to have some fun but not spend much cash over the next few weeks, take it for a log while turning the boost up slowly and watch you knock "counts". For every 3 counts the ecu is retarding the timing by 1 degree due to seeing knock. So wind the boost up till it sees knock. 1 or 2 counts could be some other excess noise in the motor, but i personally wouldnt let it go over that as they woul be actual knock. Other people are happy to let the ecu do its jod retarding timing due to the knock as this it the purpose of the timing retard. But if you are gettin high counts its pinged before the ecu steps in anyway. Id play it safe.

I would still want to check the afr's doing this method, again its comes back to you need a wideband or pay for 3 power runs on the dyno to check it for piece of mind for the time being.

This method is a bit crude so if it were me id keep the boost at a low level say 15psi untill you do things properly. It'd be a shame to pump 20psi have fun for a week and.... pop!

thanx man i think thats gonna be my plan. im hoping in the end for a safe 230kw at the wheels as a final goal.

That sounds the goods.
I'm aiming for similar power, quite frankly id be stoked anything in the 200-220 range. My setup is similar but with cams. i want it running easily into the 12's though.

Sorry about the essay i was wired on way too much coffee lol.

have fun getting the evo 8 cooler in there?

560cc inj have arrived, evo maf is here. guess now i gotta save for wideband o2sensor gauge, and ecm link

Hell yeah. I got one to, haven't had time to set it up properly but it is an awesome product! I was going to finish setting the wideband up tonight so can tune for WOT, but the urge to drink has taken over haha.
I love it already. Even simple things like being able to set the CEl light to flash on over a set amount on knock retard. Little things like that are so useful.
