Random thought....
What could you also buy for the price of a new vr4 when they were new in Australia?

I.e. What was the prices of other cars, say a family car like the VN commodore?
Other sports or luxury cars like say a new Porsche?

What were they worth when new, the figure of 50K sticks in my head for some reason?

If $50K is plugged into this inflation calculator,in 1990, in 2009 it would have been worth ~81K.

Still id like to compare it to the cost of other cars that could be bought for similar money.

I just remember my uncle telling me they had them at his Mitsi car yard and no one knew what they were. A bloke form the holden dealer took the "rice burner piece of ****' for a lap around the block and came back shocked at what a great car it was.

Ok, according to redbook the base price for a VR4 in 1992 was $37,682
Manual GGSR $32,954
Holden Statesman $39,321
CC GSR $28,960
Ford NC Fairlane $37,262

That's $58 800 with inflation in todays money. bargain.

Ill look through redbook and compare it to the prices of other cool cars... tomorrow

Another interesting question is what will they be worth in say another ten years? The prices for a VR4 seem to have hit rock bottom, so will they start to rise now they're becoming rarer and more of a cult classic? Please don't anyone say they think they'll get cheeper... I think I'd cry...:(

Its all jap cars, not just vr4's look at j-spec imports for example, plenty of evo 6's in the 15-20k range complied.
I could have kept my vr4 pretty stock and just saved and bought an evo 6 with the ammount of money ive sunk into my car. Its all i spend money on now lol.
But, building it youself is rewarding, so i hope she has some fasts now.

Ill get a maky 6.5 or evo 3 one day!

IMO, it doesn't matter what they are worth if you plan on keeping them.

But I've heard plenty of similar stories of guys who have owned SS commo's and had traded them in for GVR4's. The salesmen thought that they had lost the plot.

A quick test drive quickly changed their minds though!! For some reason, most mitsu salesmen had no idea what 4cylinder cars could do!!

When new -
Vr4 = $40 000
Porsche 944 turbo = $120 000

Now -
Vr4 = $5000-$10 000
Porsche 944 turbo = $20 000

I feel sorry for the guys that bought the Porsches (but man would I love to buy a 944 turbo now).

I've always wondered too whether the VR4 community here on this site have enough of a share of the number of VR4s out there to start dictating prices? I mean if we own a significant number of the Galants getting around, could we have a sort of gentlemens agreement to keep the prices higher. I never plan on selling my car but it would be nice to know that in the future it would still be worth something... Interesting thought?

just like communism, it works great in theory :lol:

Hell NO! I want them to be worth nothing, $100 tops, bought and sold for a couple of cartons of beer. That way I could almost afford to build one up as a rally car. And that way alot of other VR4's might get used for what they were built for :w00t:.

my boss was working at essendon mitsubishi selling the VR4's new and said they where ahead of there time, but the price was around $44k, and ended up droping to $38k just to sell them off, most of the people where real estate and doctors etc that could afford them

My XJ40 was $140.100 list price in 1990 :)
I got if for $3k
