On the way home from work today, all of a sudden the GSR started to whine heaps when backing off the accelrator. As soon as I got back on the gas the whine went, or when I put the clutch in the whine went. Car drives & feels normal, could it possibly be that the transfer case has shit itself?

Ideas, cheers.

i've had that since i replaced my clutch 65k's ago...first started when i was using the redline oil in the transfer. ever since, i haven't bothered.

i've tried replacing the transfer seal a number of time - today aswell actually. and i've been told it could be the tail shaft - which i did today aswell, and its still there...the metal rattling sound is gone, but the vibration is still there. feels like its coming from the back but sounds like its from the front - if that makes sense.

it'd prolly be the transfer case if its vibrating.
but then again, when i had the stocky vr4 rims on, most of the vibration was gone :?

Whining/Vibration

hmmmmmm, it only started happening all of a sudden today. The whining noise is REALLY loud, what does it mean that when I put the clutch in it goes away?

did you check if any oil has leaked out?

mines doing it to but my gearbox is a bit tired

im running Castrol VMX80 in Transfer and G/Bo
and Castrol LSD oil in the rear as its way thinker

Does it make a difference what gear you are in? load or rolling? I dunno about transfer case, I would be more inclined to think a bearing in the diff or gearbox to be the cause, or MAYBE a wheel bearing..

What does it mean that when I put the clutch in it goes away? Means the problem is probly not the motor! Some may consider that to be a good thing at least!

Whinging

Doesnt make a difference what gear it is in, just as soon as I back off the gas it starts whiniing..... If I depress the clutch pedal the whining disappears. Does that help?

Does the gearbox have oil in? I know that sounds like a silly question, but when my box had no oil in it (after a bearing failed and smashed a big hole in the casing) it whined like hell, but still drove and shifted fine.

It's probably the transfer case though, if it's done 240,000km's the bearings are well past their use by date, it'll cost stuff all to replace them (compared to all the ones in the 'box anyway) and it prevents the chance of having it seize, and potentially explode.
At least drain the t-case oil and have a look, silver = bad.

Could it possibly be caused by the gearbox end float being set incorrectly??

Whiniing

Yeah, gearbox still has oil in it. Was just filled up at techsport recently during service with hypoid oil. And the whining noise doesnt occur when acclerating, just when backing off the gas. Also, as I mentioned the gearbox has new bearing set in it and reconditioned (at a cost of 2000!!!).

what clutch are you using?

some clutches can increase the harmonics throughout the drivetrain..
esp solid / non sprung clutches

Whining noise

Exedy Sports Organic clutch I am using. The noise that the car is making only started today - ive had the clutch in for 5000 kms. Pressing the clutch in causes the whining to cease.

I know someone who recently had the transfer case fail in a CC GSR Lancer.

His description was a whining mostly noicable between 2 and 3000 Rpm on coasting..then the transfer case locked up on him one night and the car tail whipped out of control from shoulder to shoulder on the Highway..lucky not to have an accident.

Forget wheel bearings..they hum.

The gearbox output shaft is a notorious culprit for whining and that noise does go away with the depression of the clutch..you say its replaced though..can you be 100% on that? that particular bearing is a weak one it whines slightly on acceleration and gets louder on decceleration and cancels itself out at partial throttle.

In all honesty look to the transfer case..oil with a silver glimmer means that there is aluminium through the oil because the bearings have picked up and spun in the housing...more or less its f*cked.

Check the transfer case.

if its just been fixed take it back to techsport and get them to have a look, they will tell you straight away whats wrong
