20G Fess up

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

OK, I got a 20G related question....

I got my 2.3 litre (272/272 cams, 8.9:1 comp) dyno'd yesterday at it pulled 153kw atw, with 10psi. This is with a Big16G highflowed with a GT Pumps 20G comp wheel.

When we put in a bleed valve and tried winding more boost into it, the charge air temps started getting hotter and we weren't making as much power.

I'm running an EVO2 ECU with a MEEK chip, would this have anything to do with it?

The 2.0 4G63T in my GSR galant made 129kw on 9psi with a BIG 16G.

With some 272's and supporting mods and a (VR-4-PLAY) chip it made 216 (front wheel) kilowatts on 20psi. Im also using a bleed valve

Something doesn't sound right on your setup- do you have a dyno print out with AFR's?

at a glance i reckon your comp ratio might be too high,

imo needs to be under 8.5 for decent boost. other than that
is there any restrictions in the intake/exhaust system??

Yeah I was a bit worried about the comp ratio - but they're EVO3 spec CP pistons, and I know that people have squeezed more boost out of factory E3s than 10psi.

I'm going to remove all the cooler piping and cooler and look at them for blockages, but my air intake pipe is pretty much a straight 3" tube right into the turbo.

Dre - I don't have the AFR print-outs of the run.

OK, I realised that they hadn't hooked the bleed valve up properly when they did the dyno run

So I've intalled a turbotech valve as per the instrucgtions and am now looking to tune it to squeeze the most boost out of it possible.

So the question is - if I'm running EVO3 spec pistons (ie 9:1 comp ratio), what is the max boost I can run. I know E1-2 can run more boost due to the lower comp ratio but I'm stuck using E3 spec as I don't want to tear the motor down.

I'm looking at maybe 15-17psi. Is this realistic? I use 98 RON fuel only.

I wouldn't worry about that particular comp ratio mate.

I run 9:1 pistons in my motor, and the head and block have been decked, and I have no problems jamming 22-23psi down my engine's throat.

What cams do you have in the motor? That'll dictate the dynamic compression ratio which will tell the real story behind how much boost you can run.

i would say 15-17psi would be fine, you wont know
until you run it. just check intake and engine temps

+1

Put her on a dyno and get the AFR's checked, and adjust the timing and boost to suit 8)

I don't know George, when we built the engine we sat them in the head and put the stock cam-gears back on? How do I check?

to dial them in properly you need to check the lift on the cams
at certain degrees of cam duration. it makes sure the cams
are opening and closing exactly when they should in comparison
to the crank angle.

means you get max fift when you should etc..

Update - I took the Coupe back to RE Customs this morning with the TurboTech installed. It pulled 172.5 kw atw on 12psi. Same problem again though - when we tried winding anymore boost into it (ie upto 15psi) - it started losing power. I don't have any temp measurements as there are no bungs in my piping for probes (but I'm going to install some for future).

All I can think is that it's losing power when more boost is pumped into it because of heat? It's not leaning out or pinging, in fact if anything I could lean it out a bit more (AFR is 10.6:1)

I've checked my i'cooler and piping and there's no blockages or leaks that I could find.

Could it also be:
1. Compressor out of efficiency? It's a GT Pumps big 20G comp wheel in Big16G housing.
2. Aluminium 'cooler piping soaking up heat? Am running MEEK piping kit and have not heard of anybody else saying this is a problem.
3. Factory ECU (with MEEK chip) pulling power back due to ???

If it helps - I'm running 3" exhaust, highflow 3" dump, 3" air intake (virtually a straight pipe!), 560cc injectors, Walbaro 255 fuel pump, factory EVO a/flow meter (could this be the problem!?)

Am at a bit of a loss.

DOH!! I didn't even think of the 2" section of exhaust I have flanged onto my 3" system to quieten it down on the street!!

I'll try removing that....
