gday all,
As a few of you know I have been collecting a few bits and pieces. I am now almost ready to assemble a stroker engine
{after fixing the piece of chinese crap eagle crank}. I have forged JE stroker pistons, eagle rods, piece of chinese crap eagle 4340 stroker crank, acl race bearings,1mm over size valves, bc valve springs and retainers.

the car is a toy to satisfy my urge to go fast and do stupid things....yes even at 50 I do stupid things. I drive it weekends and the wife wont drive it at all as she thinks its too fast alreadywith a std evo 2 engine on 17psi.

For the engine build I have a two sets of cams to choose from and a set of HKS adjustable pulleys/fine tune belt.

the cams are brian crower
272/272
280/280

Ive recently installed a set of 272/272 into an evo 1 for PETSOS when I did his engine change. Not a bad idle with a bit of lope and no real cahnge in driveability {not grumpy to drive} so I even after the short time in the car I think I could live with these easily.

does anyone have an opinion to offer of the 280s? in terms of user friendly

I will use an ostrich to tune the std ecu and have 560cc injectors and a walbro. I am after grunt but not at 9000rpm.... and intend to stay within the parameters of the injectors as Im not looking for a dyno queen. I have a close ratio gear set and low ratio plate style limited slips diffs coming.

feedback is welcome.

brian

I would say the 272s I have some in my car and yet to have them dialed in or the car tuned, but they are quite tolerable for a daily.
I think ENGINR has installed his 272s into his stroker so he would probably be the best guy to ask about cam options on the 2.3.

You should stick with the 272's as there's really not much gain going to 280's especially if you're not going for a high rpm application (as you have stated). I've got 280's and have them in two of my mates cars. They idle at around 1100-1200rpm and when it comes to emissions the 280's are a lot harder to tune and get passed. Heres a couple of vids I took of both of their cars at my place for you to see, well hear, how lumpy they are on street driven cars. I built the bottom end in 'The Godfather' and Mick's Motorsports built 'Anthony's' car :D :

272's I'd go with, as rob said "not much to gain going 280's" unless that's what you'll need as a supporting mod to whole direction and expectations out of your built motor!

"if you're not going for a high rpm application (as you have stated). "

Im expecting 8000 to be about top end .....limiter.

I maybe a little thick between the ears, but have I heard correctly; stroker and 8000rpm in the same sentence? How does that work?

8000 wont get used thats where it will hit limiter

Yep thats right, 272's rpm range is for up to 8000rpm. The 280's can go a bit more above this.

Yep thats right, 272's rpm range is for up to 8000rpm and not overly considered high. The 280's can go a bit more above this. Drag 4G63's run around 300 and revving over 9000rpm [easy] :D

As Windex said - I've got 272/272s in my 2.3 stroker and I reckon they're great. Driveability and power delivery are awesome, the car has a great idle (IMO!) and when you've got some good top-end speed up she still has enough oomph to pull away nicely (as I found at Sandown at 170+kph!)

I've had no issues revving my stroker out to redline a few times and as long as I don't hold it there for too long I don't see a problem with doing it every now and then (blows the cobwebs out ;))

When my adj gears are tuned (it's in the shop right now) I'm hoping that I'll get the full benefit from the cams. I've been told that the full potential of 272/272 cams can't be had until they're dialed in properly.

just a quickie! I have a 2.4 ltr stroker and my limiter is set for 7500 and i can tell you it gets there very bloody fast so another 500 isn't going to hurt.
Also it is still making power at 7500, It is still in the loosen up stage as it has only done 1700ks at makes a nice 335hp ATW @ 16 psi and 9degs of timing in the fun end.

So IMO 8000 isn't that bad if the motor is build correctly!

as for the cams go the 272's 280 really is track sizing.

you will notice a big difference with the 280's on the street at the 60k speeds and traffic, you don't spend a lot of time at 60 and in traffic but when you do it makes you question yourself, (sometimes)

re: 8000 rpm --> do you know what Nic Zervos revs his car out to?
a lot higher than 8k I can tell you (this obviously is a well built motor)

hey brian good to here the stroker is coming along. i have my stroker built and ready to drop in. just need the time to do all the work. i have put fp2's in mine (similiar to 272's) but if i had my time again i would get fp3x's. these are the stroker cams of choice and take advantage of the inc. in VE where you need it. have a look on dsmtuners for the comparison to 272's. the only trouble is the need for dual valve springs due to the steep ramp rates these things have.
why is the eagle crank a POS mate?

you tell me why I thought it was a pos. three plugs looked like this and the fourth was just below the outer level so cross threaded it will never come out. one plug was only 1.5 turns in!! it needs a polish. ready to install my arse.

That's what you get buying blind from Oversea's I suppose and going with what looks like a knife edged cast crank.

one would think that buying a crank from a company that has a fair reputation for making reasonably priced products that are generally of a good standard you would get a product that is of their usual standard. hence overseas purchase.

this crank is nothing like the six bolt stroker crank I had...in terms of finish and quality that was very good. and yes the casting is pretty rough on this crank but that isnt what pissed me off ....it was the gallery plugs and the poor journal finish.

is there something wrong with a knife edge crank btw?
