I have a 4G15 EFI CA lancer shitbox which is starting to mysteriously cut out whilst driving. It starts to make clicking noises behind the stereo in the dash and then shuts the power down as if the car has run out of fuel.

Would i be right to presume the MPI replay is playing up and needs to be replaced???

quite possibly could be the mpi relay playing up,

if you replace it and it still plays up maybe find someone with a scan tool and see if theres any fault codes logged, and if soo go from there

I had something similar, turned out to be a corroded battery terminal.

I checked the battery terminals and they are sweet, you can clearly hear something clicking loudly 2 or 3 times just before it cuts out, which is why I though it was the MPI.

I wonder if MMCD would store the fault codes?

Doesn't MMCD show up any check engine light codes anyway?
When I first read it, I was thinking MPI relay as well. Although isn't the relay near the glovebox, not behind the stereo?

i thought the fuses and relays were underneath the steering wheel

maybe there could be a loose wire behind the stereo earthing out on another wire

mpi relay is behind the stereo screwed on the 2 bracket going vertical. passenger side bracket.

i would say it would be the MPI relay, i have had a few customers with the same issue and the relay sorted it. there is usually a delay when you turn the car off, like turn the key then anything from 3 to 10 seconds later the relay will turn off, should be the same sound.
i dare say the relay would be the same as your borg or any other mitsi, see if you have a spare to try dre.

Have you checked the ECU caps last time many years ago I had this issue it was melted caps first thing effected on the circuit board was fuel circuit.

I havent, but do have a spare lying around somewhere if it is :D

if you can hear it its probly a relay

mine was the fuel cap causing vapour lock...lol and i think I nearly changed the whole engine
