Broken gearbox:(

Help Support 4GTuner:

Some one will correct me of I'm wrong, but your rpms at 100ks seem to be more like 3.9 diff ratios not 3.5s....

Yep, thats right Chase. 3500rpm at 100kmh is what you find with a 3.9 ratio.
I recommend not to purchase a new gearbox until you open the dead gearbox up and count the number of teeth on the front diff crownwheel.
Have fun taking the large nuts off the back of the shafts, they are staked on. I use a hole punch and hammer to push them out. You will need to fiddle with the gear selecter mechanism to lock the gearbox up so that you can undo the large nuts once you have un-staked them free from the notch.

Hi guys, sorry for the hold up. I can't get the two exhaust bolts undone to remove the transfer case. the rest of the job is all done and ready to come out. Need propane! Hey while it's still in there. I should mention I'm not 100% if my car in 5th doing 100kph was at 3200 rpm or higher? It definitely was above 3gand though.I really want to buy a box now to speed things along. Is there ANY way at all to know what I should be looking to buy while still in the car? This 22/23 spline thing I'm ment to look at. Where is it? In the actual box? I pulled the shaft on the drivers side and counted 25teeth so I'm guessing that's not what uz are talking about lol. Not gearbox specialist. Also. How do you tell what diff is in the rear? 4 bolt etc?

The spline count is for the shaft that connects the box to the transfer case Carl. You can't count those till you get it off :)
As for 3 or 4 bolt diffs. Just follow the rear axle out to the outer end of it and see it the hub that it attaches to uses 3 or 4 bolts.
Pretty simple!
Easiest thing to do is wait till you drop it to check mate.

check here, jack will show you how to check final drive ratio and tcase ratio without opening box
i not sure what 57 or 58 teeth on crown wheel mean
i presume 57 tooth is 3.5 ratio and 58 is 3.9 ratio

your broken box doesnt happen to be LSD front does it? ie you can see straight through the front axle holes?

if you wana drive down to my place (tad far), id love to dismantle it and see what you broke........

This is getting beyond a joke. Cannot crack the nut on the front pipe. On one side is the 17mm bolt. Got that loose with the help of Boeings tools and a mate who spends more time lifting weights than Mr Shwarzenegger. But the 19mm nut on the otherside has become one with the pipe. Even with a bolttle of Jds as motivation. So I finally tracked down a gas torch. Will be having another crack on thurs. Otherwise I will probably have to remove the manifold or something along those lines.

If you talking about on your exhaust spray heaps on INOX on it for a day then try again.

Tried doing the test in vid but without the weight of the car pushing this box along there was no way i was able to move it (could hear shit grinding) I then took the rear case off and right away i could see how stuffed this box is. gear teeth everywhere. i then gave up on the gear bolts and proceeded to take off the bell housing.....those of you who work on these obviously know that wont come off without removing the two 36mm gear bolts (and as you can see i now do too! lol ) Well even with the bell housing cracked apart 1cm from the box ALOT of chunks of metal and shit came out :D I have two photos of it so far. pics up soon. Funny thing was when all the crap came out it freed up a bit so i could finally count the 58 teeth on the crown wheel. So now the mistery is solved i can purchase my new box! Now. 1st gear is pointless and ive heard you can get a longer gear to fix this. My question is. Would that then make second seem a bit pointless also?
