Whats the deal here?

In terms of registration/ stamp duty/ number plates?

AFAIK you need a vic roadworthy cert to register a car here, so if i buy a car from NSW with NSW rego, how can i get it down here?

Transfer NSW rego to my name? then drive it down here and re-register it in VIC?

roadworthy ~ $70
Rego ~ $575
Stamp duty ~ $who knows
what other costs am i forgeting?

so whats the best way of doing that then? Dont i need a NSW address to transfer NSW rego to? :?

catch a plane to sydney, pay the cash for the car............sort out paperwork (transfer rego papers) then drive it down to melb?

could i do that in one day?

i wouldn't bother transferring the rego
you just have to make sure that the owner trusts you to drive down to melbourne, and cancel the rego.... and not get any speeding fines
but yeah, fly to sydney (or drive up with a friend), pick up car, drive home

It's not an ask at all. When/if a speeding fine arrives, you fill out the back, tick the "New owner" box and get it signed by a JP (Justice of the peace) and they send a new fine to the person behind the wheel.

Easiest method... i've done this TWICE now is to buy the car, get a receipt, do all that crap. Take it down to vic, goto vicroads, get an APPLICATION FOR REGISTRATION not a Vehicle Transfer Form, get your RWC, goto vicroads, get appointment for rego, at appointment...

KNOW WHERE YOUR ENGINE NUMBER IS
Fill out required forms
Expect around 400 dollars in stamp duty per 10000 spent
Pay for 1 years rego (460-odd dollars)
HAND IN NSW PLATES
AFFIX VIC PLATES (bring a screwdriver/etc)
Affix rego sticker

Drive away. Don't forget insurance

just fill the transpher forms out and that will cover the other guys ass coz they arfe dated and sighned and ****, it is a legal binding document just dont hand it in
