catch can questions

Hey guys...

Before you say do a search, I have searched and read the posts but haven't found the answers I'm looking for.

Where do you usually mount the catch can? What do you mount if with?

I'm not running the factory intake anymore and my new intake doesn't have a hole in it to connect the hose from the catch can to it. Can I run both hoses from the rocker cover to the catch can and plug the inlet manifold?

Where do I get a suitable barb from?

I am doing that, used a M10 bolt i think. I did a crap job.

Your catch can needs to be vented.

Normally mounted on the drivers side guard i think...

Pirtek can do it all nice for you i think.

mount it where u can
connect 2 hoses from the rocker cover to the can,
vent the can to atmo or back into the intake (but i dont reccomend that)

or use the exhaust as a vac and vent the can to the exhaust
make sure u have 3 hose connections on the can, not just 2..

when you mean vent... do you mean putting one of those little breather things on it? (atmo venting)

all the ones i have seen so far don't have a fitting for one. do you have to make a hole in the top or something?

what do I use to block the inlet manifold where one of the hoses usually goes to?

u can drill out the top with a few holes.. u want to keep the catch can higher than the rocker cover, minimse the fluid , but allow the gasses to escape..

as for the plug, u can do it the easy way or the hard way,
u can use a socket and remove the nipple completely and screw in a bolt with some teflon tape to seal it completely OR u can use a hose and bolt with a clamp on the end of it...

remember to remove the PCV and swap it over with a barb also, use a spanner and do it, take the PCV to PIRTEK or something and get them to get a barb with the same thread..

what about having the catch can mounted high but venting it via a hose that sits outside the engine bay. i know if you vent them in the engine bay your car will stink when the you have the heater or a/c on.

The first one there looks like the type you need. the other looks more like a oil/air seperator that you plumb back into the intake.

Does anyone have any pics of there setups

I have the first one and i wouldn't rate it.

POS in my oppinion.

Too small.

Get something like the greddy look alike with a filter...if you find one post a link I am looking for one too.

why is it so necessary to have the filter in it anyway? why can't it just connect the 2 hoses to it and leave it sealed? or will it create too much pressure in the motor?

so if it builds up too much pressure in the catch can, it will blow the oil cap off?..

how much pressure are we talkin about? as in normal driving or more?..

thats my catch can there next to my battery.. i dont have any breather or anything.. just 2 hoses

i woulda thought it'd be more likely to blow the dipstick out rather than blow the oil cap, the oil cap is screwed down...

what is your catch can fixed to olly?

i got my mech to weld me a bracket which bolts up just under the battery and i attach my catch can from that..

one goes from the rocket cover and the other goes into the intake..

Thats fine then. its only when both breathers (breather & pcv outlet) on the rocker cover are running to the catch can, that you need a seperate vent.

if u have a catch can with 2 nipples on it, and u connect the 2 hoses from the rocker cover onto that can, its as good as plugging up those 2 holes on your rocker cover...
the rocker cover beathers have to vent somewhere, pressure is building up in your crack case and it needs to be vented otherwise you'll start blowing seals/dipsticks/etc etc...

u can run 2 hoses to the can and another hose to the intake (3 total) or just vent to atmo (so 2 hoses to can from engine, 1 hose to nowhere...)

the filter is there just to look good i guess, but u can just drill a few neat holes on top of the can to release the pressure... as long as it catches all the vapours comming out of your motor (will keep your engine bay clean)

but yes, if u vent to atmo, you will stink of oil fumes and they somehow find their way into the cabin...
