Hi guys,

I recently had installed a 5 puck ceramic clutch and want to know the correct bedding in proceedure.
For the past 200km's I've been taking it very easy but I am getting anxious, especially today when a WRX was playing silly buggers next to me wanting to race.

any help from previous experience is appreciated.

cheers,

300-350 kms don't be a bitch or hit boost.

350-500kms, boost to about 7psi/don't go past 5500-6000 rpm.

500kms plus? Rip the **** out of it. It should grip now.

GSR70Y you poor bugger getting teased by a wrx & your car isn't ready !
You'll fix that wrx on track day ay  --Aldo.

My clutch was bedded in by going to launch it and getting to fraction point i.e launch it but not.

That was done 5 or so times, the next day my car hit the dyno and later that day I had 6 runs at the drags. 2500kms and 2 drag meets later, its still MINT.

I'm running the exedy button, 3-puk ceramic

im my opinion, just drive it normally, dont ride it though
rev, slip.. drive..

i have heard numerous stories of how to bed a clutch in,
i've asked around from specialists to consumers...

just dont ride the thing...
dont launch it straight away either..

i've got a 4puck ceramic, at the start it was very bitey... over time it will get easier to drive..

i've also experienced the same thing with a 5 puck... very stuttery at the start, over time it gets smoother...

yup i got a 5 puck ceramic aswell and as bazeng said.. it is very stuttery at start almost like a jolting if you don't give enough gas..

drive your car up a hill to load up the clutch and wear it in.. at around 200km slip and launch the clutch... by around 300km it should be bedded in.

Aldo, The truth is, I didn't want to embarrass him infront of his boyfriend.

I've heard conflicting stories about bedding in also, I've been told to drive like a granny for 1000k's by one person, while another tells me to rape it from day one. It's the first time I own one of these clutch's and don't want to **** it up.
So far my experience has been: Up to 250k's I agree exactly with what olly and Baz said and It slipped at only 1-2psi 3 days after installation, which got me worried. Yesterday it did just over 300k's so I did what Jstyle and Enteran suggested and took it for a spin along the freeway and loaded it up slowly only for it to slip at 5psi, I backed off and kept driving for another 15mins then tried again, This time It held 5psi just fine, 51k's later, it can now hold 8psi quite well,(80-85% throttle on low boost setting, about 110kwatw) drivability has improved too, So I guess it's being bed in properly.

I'll stick with Enteran and Baz's instructions, so should I mainly take it easy with some short bursts every now and again?

experience mate, you've gotta try it yourself and over time u'll know whats best...

we're all learning this also...

but i honestly think its very hard to stuff it up!

LAUNCH THE THING ALREADY!!!
lol

i have a 3 puck ceramic, same as dre's and ive done about 1100 km's in it...
i got it done at AFAS who told me to pretty much baby it for the first 1000km's. I'm finding now, that it grips like a ****** taking off in first, changing first to second, but it still seems to slip a bit changing from 2nd to 3rd and 3rd to 4th... :?
any ideas why? give it a bit more of a raping and see what happens do you think? :p

to me it sorta feels like the more you baby it the more it slips (eg, easy driving)

the more u rev it, the more it thumps as you shift.. (no slip, just grip)

well, took it along the freeway again and tried for max boost, At first It slipped easily, So I took it easy for a few k's then I put my boot into it, It worked!! :D
Tried it again it slipped near high boost, eased it on again then planted it, IT WORKS!!

It's now done 465K's, On the way home It slipped during a little run I had against an R33 skyline but i grabbed again and just when I thought he had me, I managed to creep infront

I really appreciate everyone's help.
Thanks a bunch.

Dave,

For a moment I thought I bit off more than I can chew so I guess it's time for a small power increase. I ordered a Gizzmo EBC through work and recieved it today so now I'm on the hunt for some yellow top injectors. :)

I'm still a little bit worried about this bloody clutch.
It's covered over 800k's and it's still slipping. And believe me, I've been doing some very spirited driving as instructed..
If I load it up slowly on high boost it works fine, but at lower revs and giving it full throttle in 3rd 4th and 5th it slips.
I'm starting to think that the pressure plate doesn't have enough clamping force or I have selected the wrong clutch..

any ideas?

who installed and supplied the clutch?

it shouldn't slip..

did u get the flywheel machined with the step?

I ordered the clutch through work, I had the flywheel machined at a local brake and clutch specialist before a mate who is a qualified mechanic installed it.
