Just reading an interesting on line book
"free yourself from microsoft and the nsa" (Link below.)

It is a long rant about how Ms is doing all it can to tighten its monopoly on Operating systems and colluding with the NSA in USA to monitor computer traffic

The guy REALLY hates Ms and especially windows8
I can't say I blame him. I've only just looked at 8 in the store and I hate it already and don't want it ever!
(apparently you can't change your password without going on line, hmmmm!?)
BUT of course windows 7 will eventually stop being supported so where do you go from there?

He suggests a linux OS, in particular Linux Mint mate 15
When you get to the real instructions it's not bad although Linux mint mate is now up to version 17
I am playing with it on virtual machine ATM but it looks pretty good

I am using it to do this post via its firefox browser

I think I will put it on my old computer and give it a go.

Linux based OS is the best by a long shot! The only real problem that I have encountered was with the some of the community, the learning curve is very steep, they can smell noob and are poised to attack at any time using

the keyboard of humiliation with +9 sarcasm rune.

I agree with what's discussed in the book, I have always looked at the net as the greatest time saver for anyone looking to profile the world, I act like everything I type is being logged all the time anyway and am mindful

about what I post.

There are gigapixel cameras, satellites, yada yada. Realistically the only way to avoid being spied on by the PTB is to die LOL They have ways even when it appears none exist.

i ran an ubuntu box for a while i loved it but my shit c$nt brothers couldn't figure out why every time they got on it they couldn't access the network (even though i never had an issue unless they screwed with it first) so the little shits went and loaded win 7 over the top of it on me. and i don't use it enough to warrant changing it back.

(this is also why my links to workshop manuals went down as it was the server host aswell.)

agree with the above linux/ubuntu /whatever other flavor you like has a steep learning curve with a very hands on maintenance schedule you cannot just install sit and forget like you would with a windows or apple (unix) box

I didn't even like the home page on 8 and have stayed with 7. My intention is to eventually quit windows OS altogether

I bit the bullet and converted an old ASUS computer to Linux Mint Mate and I am quite pleased with it (after getting sick of dual boot and not enough space on the Linux partition)
Just worked out how to get the Mitsubishi ASA working on it so that was one major thing I wanted to do
Using WINE I can apparently install all of my MS Office programs too so hopefully will be able to stay in touch with all the other Office users out there.

Currently trying to get an old Toshiba Satellite laptop with a faulty hard disk up again. Windows wont boot at all.
Discovered Linux Wary Puppy 5.5 which will run the computer from a 700 Mb cd and allow access to the hard drive too. Looks interesting and is a tiny little OS.
It is particularly for older computers which fits the Tosh well.

wine is ok and yes you can run all your ms programs through it. even games if the rest of the system is setup accordingly. but it's beter for office programs etc because what you are doing is essentially running windows ontop of ubuntu

Ha Linux rules

I'm doing this post on an old Toshiba Satellite laptop which would not boot and windows system disk couldn't repair or rewrite or even wipe the HDD.

Disk drive was fu.broken and is now sitting out on the desk because I thought it wqas going to throw a rod through the side from the noise. (probably why chkdsk /r didn't work)

Booted and running from a cd using linux wary puppy 5.5 which is on a 700 Mb cd.
All I have to do now is make it boot from the usb slot (which it is not happy with yet) and I wont need a HDD or to boot from the floppy.

Wonder if wine will work with this distro? (See I'm starting to speak Linux geek) Unintentional rhyming sorry

Running Linux Mint Mate 17 Rebecca now which has a pretty good GUI

Getting better at using WINE and have now worked out how to get the Mitsi ASA running and updated too.

Most pleased with Linux but am still in wonderland (like wtf??) about the dreaded terminal and all of those commands.

Gave up on the little Toshi, although I got Mint 17 to run on it OK the disk monitor said the HDD was about to fail and it got too slow to play with.

you could have hunted around for another dead laptop and stole the 3.5" hdd from that or gone full geek and replaced the laptops spinner with a ssd

Gone off it for a while, being dead lazy or just don't organise myself very well (or both)

I'm now hating windows 10 (still running 7) and all of the adverts
Tried it and swapped back
May have to do the swap to 10 before it gets expensive, although how do you charge for something you have been giving away?
I wonder if they are meeting targets with conversions.

I haven't lost interest in Linux, just haven't found the apps that will do what my windows computer does especially in mail merge to an email

Anyway full Linux is still the dream

Do the conversion before the free period ends and grab and copy your cd key you can then revert back without issue
