I posted this other forums, but seeing what others opinions are

Ive come to cross roads, I see my EVO3 under a car cover in the shed more than i see it off, and the room taken up be an the enclosed transporter well you get the idea and the idea to sell both/trade up to a EVO8/9 or keep the EVO3 and refine to get a bit more out of it keeps creeping in.
On paper it appears that when comparing (stanard) power-weight most EVO's are on a fairly level playing field and not differing much, but it appears that its in the corners that the later models are excelling against the each previous model.
I know ultimately it comes down to my end descision, but is it reasonable to be able to get a CE9a chassis to handle/brake/corner like a EVO8/9 on reasonable budget. (btw primarily Hillclimb/street sprint oriented).

well for my 2cents worth I say keep the 3.

Not only didn't my wife drive the 8 I had, but I didn't enjoy it that much either. Great pose value but not really any faster than my gsr....in a traffic light derby

as far as a motor sport thing...it is harder to justify throwing 28k against a tree than 10k should the unfortunate event arise.

the8 /9 do handle well and the tricky diffs certainly help that....but 1500 to3k for a transfer case......as opposed to 200 :blink:mm well they are dearer to fix as well.

Brakes in the 8 are great.....compared to a 123. so if your on std brake size you can gain ground there. But to be honest I think the biggest difference in handling and stopping comes from the wider tyres they can run......and the old girls just cant get the width under the car.

I'v been wrestling with a similar issue, that being whether to jump straight from a CC GSR to an Evo 6 or 7, or to buy a reshelled Evo II / III

I'm thinking of doing the latter, and am on the verge of buying an Evo 2 reshell (GSR with Evo 2 4G63 & drivetrain).

I think one of the things that swayed me was the ability to work on the car myself.

I'd be terrified of attempting anything bar an oil change on a 6/7/8 !! :(

However, it could backfire on me, trying to engineer and register a modified car in S.A. !!

Never the Cedia chassis is so much stiffer and they handle so well with no mods, as opposed to a gsr with everything thrown at it.

Why there F all difference a part from the ayc elec diff's, if you can walk around a gsr mechanically ? you'll piss in working on a later model evo

If I had my time over again I'd take the $$$ I've poured into my car (which has just spent 12x months not being driven) and jumping into an EVO9.

I agree 110%... the fact is that the 7/8/9 (especially 8/9) is an improvement over the early cars in every single area.. not just the obvious like braking, power, torque, active diffs, but the little details like suspension travel, geomentry efficency and weight, hugely stiffer chassis etc..

I was lucky enough a few years ago to borrow a Evo 9 press car from Mitsibishi, we used it for Recce for some stages of the Adelaide Hills Tarmac Rally, aswell as just going for a hills run and also spending the 2nd day out at Mallala.. while the grip level made it almost boring to drive on public roads, if you want a car for club motorsport.. then look no further.. I would think that you would need to spend a fair bit of coin to get the same sort of grip that you can get from a stock or very mild Evo 789.. but the difference is that the Early car would be a bit of an animal and a pain to drive on the street, where the 789 is just like a family sedan..

I agree there is downsides like cost of parts etc, but the trade off here is everything is still availible new from Ralliart, which save so many headaches.. Also the later cars are not harder (in some cases easier) to work on IMO..

i was thinking bout this awhile back but decided im goin to improve what i have. im goin to try and fit a evo 4 rear cradle to my car and trailing arms so i can fit bigger wheels and not only run brembo brakes but can run the ap racing upgrade too. which will follow to the front 5 stud upgrade too. may even fit a cage to stiffen it all up and run some more track orientated coil overs. i really cant see the reason why our cars cant even be better then the newer models we are way lighter for a start. the new models are just easier to drive. and if i sold my car to buy a prob near stock newer model i would be out of pocket 20g and thats before i start modifying i think id rather spend that 20g on improving what i have rather then buying something then having to spend more on it to get it goin up to my standard.

my rant anyway lol

Its a hard call...
Im not new to streets sprints, and only see a couple of EVO's at events (pittsworth being the most at one event ive entered).
The fastest EVO being a VI rs (4SEEN from Mt ISA)with good power, a lightweight approach , semi slicks, LSD's and no electronic gizmos. Just balls and guts if you want to put it.
SO theory being its shouldnt be out of the question, but like theories budgets normally blow out in trying to achieve, plus budget blow outs having to fix whilst trying to achieve the result.

yeh i wouldnt use 4seen as a benchmark to chase it is super quick i think it holds the record for the mt stuart hill climb here in townsville too. and im sure its been sold and is now has an 8 mr which will prob be super quick too. i guess it all comes down too your budget how much you got to play with cause it usually is the richest guy that wins. myself im not after winning just fun in my car and being apart of motorsport i at the very least should be able to stay competative but thats all i want. if you have the budget go for it buy and evo 8mr and spend 100g on it should get you some $50 trophies lol

evo 3's are holding their value much better than any of the otther evos, bar the 6/6.5. hold onto it for another five years and i bet it will be worth more. while some of the evo 7,8,9 might laught at thi,s fact is people only ask for what they can get for them and ive seen evo 3's sell for over twenty grand still. (keeping in mind they were in very good condition.)

You also get more satisfaction when you beat a newer more expensive rally car. but i see both points of view on the topic. you may jump in a newer evo and have better results straight away, they are always near the front in my events i do.
Or stick with what you have and struggle to get much faster and better results ...toss a coin mate .

where is that vid that Clutz put up ????

evo 3 RS VS Evo 5 RS vs Evo 7 RS

it shows you whats quick , and what handles

for outright rawness you cant go past a properly set up 1-3, with good front and rear lsds and some brakes they are pretty competitive.
No doubt alot harder to drive fast but for me far more rewarding.
I have raced prepped 6s and 8s also and the earlies are so much more fun.
the 7-9 is a much more stable chassis and alot easier to drive fast but they are not fun enough for mine,I do
still enjoy driving them though :)

There is a guy in Perth , jason kent who is a great driver and has a wicked evo 3 rs prepped by race torque who is extremly competive in the targa west rallies so and its Proof that a well setup earlier model evo is just as good as the later ones, he has some good you tube vids to look at to. try the zig zag one on you tube.
