Hey guys,
I'm waiting to upgrade my current camera. I only have a digi cam (point and shoot) and am planning to upgrade to a dslr of some sort. Any one recommend something? I'm looking at something at a beginners/intermediate and a max budget of $450-500. I've looked on ebay but I don't know which ones are good and which ones aren't.

canon are among the best.. i have a eos 350d which i have had a couple of years now.. awesome camera... be a bit weary of buying second hand.. if it hasnt been looked after the sensor will be dirty and at the very least need to be sent away for a clean.. and posibly even replaced

Your options are limited due to price. However for the range you are looking at doesnt allow you to get into the DSLR range. But it does allow you to pickup a decent P&S camera.

Get one with decent zoom, manualised functions etc. Canon Powershot S5is On Special Click to Compare$0.00 Was $529.95
Now On Sale $499.95

Panasonic Lumix FZ-8 Black On Special Click to Compare$0.00 Was $449.95
Now On Sale $399.95

oh, if you want to buy a second have DSLR.. find out how many pictures it has taken as the lower end ones are good for around 20k shutter.

Perhaps a Nikon D70s or Canon 350d second hand would be within your budget. I own the D70s bought new, great camera :) I wont say that nikon/canon etc are the best, i found the canon lower end series felt to much like a toy.. personally.. thus went nikon.

My brother uses Nikon too. He's never had a problem with the cameras and he does it as a living. I'd recommend looking for a good second hand unit. The lens is the most important piece and the lower model Canons have very very average lenses.

I upgraded from a Canon 350D to the 400D, very nice cameras when mated to a 'L' series lens :D

There is nothing wrong with there L series, except most people cannot afford them hehe

I would look at a second hand Nikon D70.

You could get a D40 or D40x, but they need the new type lenses (AF-S) so the old mechanical lense's out there wont work. Still, its not really a bad thing, just depends what you really want.

Imo, Nikon > Canon all the way. If you like I could ask my other workmate if he has any second hand for sale (Im a camera tech), and he has all sorts of DSLR's, canon/nikon/pentax, yada yada yada. I should really get myself one too :)

You could also look at one of those cheap Pentax DSLR's, the K100D, they use the K mount lens :p

(Plus, Nikon is part of the Mitsu group ;))

I have a konica DSLR, a dynax 5d, it is a very good camera for the tiny sum I paid for it (work decided we couldn't sell them for 1499 so they dumped them to 799.. this is about 3 years ago too heh). There are a lot of lenses that support it, and additionally support will not end because it's exactly the same thing as the sony alpha. (the first alpha camera is halfway between the 5d and the 7d).

I assume you want to take car photos, the best thing about the dynax is it has built in antishake, which works with almost every lens. It is quite effective.

Also I would go with everyone elses suggestion of the Canon, simply because there are a lot of them out there, and therefore it will be easier to pick up a bargain. Don't be afraid of US ebay :D

Probably try and find a second hand canon, I sold my 350D which I had for about 3 years before I sold it, had a lot of use but I looked after it meticolously, I sold it with the 18-55 kit lense, battery grip, 2 batteries, all boxes etc, 2gb memory for $400.

You could try and get one through B&H in the states as they sometimes get 350D's in stock still and are just under 500. Shipping is quick and cheap, the 400D can be had new through them with the 18-55 kit lense for about 700 dollars:

Keep in mind, if you do get into it, don't go for a bunch of kit lenses straight up, they are not that great and what makes a good picture is largely the lense. So get yourself a good camera body and then buy lenses to suit what you shoot.

I used to sell digi cams, so unless you are keen to go second hand what illusion what saying on the first page is pretty accurate...
Cant really go wrong with either of the brands.
If you've got a budget of around 400, you cant acually look at $500 odd cameras, most have around a 30% mark up on rrp.
Now go do your best to shaft the salesman

My wife has used a Canon 10D for the last 5 years for professional use and you can pick 2nd hand ones of these up on ebay for around your budget. They are a solid prosumer camera, good for learning on.
