Hey,

New to this forum and evo's. Currently running an Evo 3 engine with everything standard apart from a chipped ECU. Went to start my car today but battery was flat so I clutch started it. The moment i let the clutch out it sounded like a WRX, was straining hard to get up in the revs and had next to no power.

The idle was that rough that accelerating was pretty much making it feel like the car was bouncing on its wheels (shaking so badly). CHecked spark, seemed ok when I took the leads off, solid spark in 3 leads but one was a bit soft. Took the plugs out and they were badly covered in black, powdery carbon (dry powder not oil). Took out the spark plug out that had weak spark at the end of the lead and put it in another cylinder...when i restarted it the idle was completely different, still had no power and was rough as but there was a noticeable change in sound.

At this point I assumed fouled plugs, bought new ones and put them in. Bough a new battery (600 CCA). Started her up and it was exactly the same. Checked spark, all leads had strong spark. Of note, the new plugs stayed clean after driving it around the block.

Checked i/cooler pipes etc and no leaks. Vacuum was fine. No bubbles in radiator and oil in the head wasnt milky (been told these are two tell tale signs of head gasket).

Last thing I found weird was that when I drove it around the block it was still hitting boost (currently at 10psi). Could still hear spool and flutter whenever i accelerated. Even was hitting boost still while I revved it in neutral.

Any ideas, was going to get new leads but then read another post on here about the ignition module and that it could be this. Any way for me to check this before I buy a new set of leads and a compression tester.

Any help is appreciated (save me wasting more $$$).

take her for a longer drive before you start taking it apart......let everything settle down and the fuzzy logic do its fuzzy thing in the ecu.

I have seen cars with bad voltage at start up need twenty or thirty kms to settle down. why I am not sure as the voltage change should be evident immediately.

give it a try anyway

^What Brian says first...
Maybe the Power TR unit on the side of the coils might be starting to **** itself?? Maybe the coils are dying.....
Electrical problems suck **** and do your head in....
