For those running aftermarket fully programmable ECU's, just wondering what are you using for your ignition if running 4 x individual coils?
* 2 x dual channel ignitiors (say 2 x Haltech HECU2's / Bosche units at $150 ea ($300 pair); or
* M&W PRO-12 CDI (Approx $750)
* Other?

the bosch modules work fine they are just not as neat
and they can suffer from excess heat also, making them fail before due time.

with the bosch ones you will also require one per plug(4) which adds up.

I was using the Bosch units on my old Galant with no issues whatsoever. Will be running Autronic 500R with the new setup.

I'm running 4x individual coils (off an LS1 - the same coils that Haltech sell). They have built in ignitors so they're simple to setup and provide a very good spark.

I've seen the same setup go 740hp atw, so they do the trick, pretty cheap really too - don't buy the coils off haltech, buy them off someone on the LS1 forums or similar, you can get them for about $60/each.

steve, are these the ones with the built in igniters?

Ive got the Buschur Racing (300M/GTPumps) 4 individual coils I bought a year and a half ago from the US and wanna wire them in for the Haltech E8 as i have no place left to bolt in stock coils and leads (pffft :lol: ).

Fark Steve, $240 the set of LS1 coils with built in ignitors sounds good. Do they fit well and do you have a pic you can show? If they sit lower than the Buschur ones then it will give me more bonnet clearance in my coupe as the coils I have at the moment foul on one of my under bonnet braces and I need to turn a couple around 180 degrees to clear it... which means I also need to make up a new base plate :?

What about these?

I doubt that the ls1 coil packs will be any lower than the ones that you already have...

do to the haltech website for a look, or just google search ls1 coil pack

Thats what I already have at the moment Jimmy but a couple foul on the under bonnet braces of the coupe bonnet... unless I can maybe turn them 45 - 180 degrees to try and see if it will help with clearance. Its gonna take a few templates I reckon :lol:

Yeah you're right Tim, those LS1 coils [pic blow] are mounted differently and a big size. They also look they they use a small lead instead of a direct connection to the top of the plugs which will give me the same dilemma as the stock coil/lead setup as to where the hell I am I gonna mount them :? I can see why they are so popular though :)

what model are they out of exactly?

5.7 yeah?
Yeah mate, any commodore from the VTII to the VY with the Gen 3/LS1. Later model motors might have have the same coils too, I'm not sure though.

Why don't you mount them remotely? Stick them on the firewall on the passenger side, then runs leads to them plugs?

Its just the lack of room I have on the firewall there Steve. I've yet got to mount the 3 bar MAP sensor on the firewall as well and i was thinking between the FPR and water washer bottle.

It might actually come down to pissing off the coil on plugs as pictured on the car below and use the $$ toward maybe making a special bracket and mounting 4 x LS1 coils with built in ignitors on the firewall next to the FPR instead. How much would the lead length between those coils and the sparkplugs pose a problem though Steve? are they really meant to only be run with short leads?

have you thought about running the coils inmside the car on the fire wall and just having the leads running to the coils rob?
