I remember when the 10% or so ethanol blend fuel came out and people were scared of using it...? Some people swore by it, others swore against using it. Now we see the E85 bio fuel hitting the scene which is up to 85% ethanol based fuel!?

When will this be available for delivery at the pump? Will stations like United be the ones who distribute it? What major changes to our cars will we need to make so we can run this fuel?

I've been using united's 95 with ethanol for quite a while and haven't had any issues!

Some more discussion is welcomed :)

I believe there is a few outlets that sell it.
One in Hoppers from memory.
the evo-oz guys are achieving some insane results!

E85 is corrosive to Aluminium over time Dre.
I would get you fuel rail internally anodised and replace any alum fittings with steel it they can't be anodised inside.
You will also need injectors that are approx 30% larger than what you would need for pump fuel with the same setup.
Once we can get E85 up here I'm going to change over to it and add some 1300 - 1400cc injectors and really have some fun!

the stuff is insane is around 115 octane.. alot of the rally guys are geting big power increases over Elf, for $1 per litre... infact Mike Dale (blackvr) got 295kw on a roller dyno in an evo 8 tarmac car, the mods were exhaust, boost and a motec.... im very much looking foward to getting the evo tuned on it..

Not as simple as it sounds. You'll need big injectors and then 2 maps so you can switch back to unleaded. Then you'll also have to tune that map to suit the injectors mismatched for unleaded. It's probably more suited to a weekend car that doesnt do many kms as there aren't many outlets selling it.

The power gains are huge, would burn heaps cooler and allow far more boost and timing.

on my car i already have dual maps functionality... people been running 1050injectors without problem on normal pump gas. the guys on evom and lancerregister been using it for a couple of years and big issues, except more power.
yep only issue is supply. i believe there are a couple places in syndey, adelaide and hoppers crossing in melb. united on kingsway is supposed to be getting it but dont know. i expect atleast 1 year or more before it is available a little more.
i have been using E10 fuels for 1.5years and no problem. but currently my injectors are over 90% when i get to about 7000+ rpm so i really do need them and hence i thought i might as well get the larger ones for E85 in the future.

Adelaide has it readily available at all EFFUE servos, more are popping up over the place. I wouldn't worry about corrosion unless you have it sitting in your tank for a while. It will take a long time for it to actually do damage.
I've been guaranteed by Steve Knight that using 1000cc's and obviously a tune I could be making 260-270kw atw limited only by the turbo (B16g)

I am looking at doing it. At the end of the day all you need to outlay is some larger injectors and tuning time and you will easily pick up 50kw atw. E85 burns much cooler, allowing more boost, more timing etc. It is pretty stable under high power and as long as the tune is good and you don't leave it sitting in the tank for a long period you won't have any issues. It is higher octane than ELF fuel and far more cost effective.
It was the fuel that all the V8 supercars were using at Clipsal, that has to say something aswell. Not to mention the hundreds of tuners now turning to it to make good cheap safe power.

Really the only problem with it is constant supply. Adelaide ran out a couple weeks ago, but as usual it is supply vs. demand. Once there is more demand, it will become more available but I guarantee you that the price will go up also.

lots of links in here for all interested.

Have done a fair bit of reading on this and a friend has tuned his evo 9 on this aswell. So far my findings are:

- Poor fuel economy down approx 25 - 30%
- Injector increase of around 30% is required (Running 560cc will see you going to atleast 720cc)
- Mean torque is reached before peak power
- Tuning is unbelievable on this stuff
- A/F Ratios can be made ALOT leaner (Seen 19:1 on cruise without pinging)

If you are getting 350 - 400km on PULP at the moment.. Expect 245 - 280km a tank.
There is no saving to be made running E85, it will work out the same $ per KM, Just means more frequent fill ups on E85.

E85 will clean your fuel system out, Recommend changing your fuel filter a few times in the first few tanks from what everyones experience is (Older cars obviously).

Im sure i had a thread about this already..

any more info on this fellas? My cars almost ready for retuning with the new setup and im considering it

What size injectors are you using Dan? 800's really aren't going to cut it with E85. I'm going to go with at least 1100's or larger when I convert :)

yeah i just found that out tonight ....

sigh :(

i think the major downfall is the whole supply thing, I mean, Its not like I can drive to a certain destination and know the servos on the way will have this stuff is it?

the way to do it, is go out in your daily the night before you plan to drive your car with a couple of fuel containers/drums and fill them up from hoppers crossing

i went down and got some in sydney last week 200litres $200 iv been told a few cars with some massive cams have been getting through EPA using E85

Or have 2 maps...
one with e85 and the other for 98...

thats a good idea and would work for most, but those who allready have large injectors 1000cc+ would need at least 1450's to run E85 to its potential. I dont think the tunability/drivability would be very nice with 98 but i could be wrong, anyone have experience?

I think i posted a link to a person who modded a skyline, went E85, tuned it and took it in and it passed EPA :) and that was with the usualy, exhaust, turbo, injectors, PFC, FMIC, Pod Filter :)

But, until E85 is readily available at majority of servos. Then no point running it in a daily.

I considered E85, but, availability will keep me on 98 for now.
