Yo mateys,
I had my factory 14b off last week and noticed a big crack across two sides of the wastegate seat. That and the boost leak that was coming through the oil passage in mind, I looked into a newie instead of rebuilding it.
I'm sure you've figured out by now I went for one off Ebay, and I'm sure there will be people asking about them every now and again sooo-
Item title: "Td05-16G Turbo Charger EVO 1, 2, 3/Eclipse/Galant"
Seller: bargains.direct
I paid $575 for it, postage was free. With 12 month warranty
It was packed a bit sloppy but no big deal. There was a bag of washers and crap that had a hole in it.
I pulled the comp and turb housings off to check out the quality of manufacturing and it all looked surprisingly good. Machined surfaces were clean and well cut. Wheels were tight and spun smoothly.
"All looks quite good, I'll just bang it back togeth. . . wait, where are the alignment notches?!"
It has no dowels/markings/notches for housing alignment, and that was a huge pain in my ass to sort out.
The studs for the turbine housing in the kit were not right, very tight, either rolled to a wrong diameter or threaded wrong, i just used my old ones.
The orange viton 'o' ring for the compressor housing was loose and it got pinched when I put the housing back on so it was leaking. I attempted sealing it back up with orange RTV silicone, yet to pressurise it to see if it fixed it.
Bolt in replacement? Nearly
The induction piping is VERY snug on the compressor housing, its slightly bigger than my original turb "snout". But it does fit I guess.
An un-used coolant passage plug gets in the way of the front coolant line, I used more crush washers to pack the line and lift it off the plug.
I also had to drill out the holes on my heat shield, cut out a bit more of the window where the wastegate actuator rod and W.G. valve lever poke out a bit and bent it a bit to fit on properly.
After all the mucking around I did to get it in, I started it up, and guess what, that plug that was in the way is also leaking coolant!! And being under a line, I'll have to pull the turbo out to get at it.
On top of the mega lag (hits 10 pound and 5000rpm in first) I have a big boost leak when it gets to 10psi.
I think thats everything I wanted to say. I'll keep yas posted if I get it performing better, but I think I'll just try returning it.
Yell out if you want to know anything else about it.
Chris
