just to bring this up again.

my engine sits around 70-80deg just for normal driving, but after a very very hard bashing have seen it near 95deg
Nah, not hot enough, try harder :D.

can someone enlighten me how to and where to connect it?
where would i be able to get a sensor?
I just bought a Speco oil temp guage and it has the sender with it. I fitted my sender in the head, near the oil line to the turbo.

Rob,

What do you think about the exhaust / head being a hotter area where your sender is screwed into? Will this cause the readings to be inaccurate?

I used that port for pressure reading and it has very low pressure at that point, about 15psi of pressure at WOT! while the bottom end was reading about 80psi.

Also would the exhaust ports / alloy head interfere with the temp readings too. ie EGT's.?

I wanted to find out the maximum oil temp in the engine as that was what I thought to be the critical thing for oil longevity. I guess wherever you take the temp from is just going to be an indication of the temp at that particular spot in the engine.

I originally wanted to work out a way to install it in the oil return line from the turbo as I figured that would have to be the place where the oil was hottest (but maybe the oil running back down the bores from the oil squirters gets hotter, I don't know), but I couldn't bring myself to hack up my GTpumps return line to do so, so I stuck it up there in the head. As the oil will be varying in temperature all through out the engine, I don't think there is a "right" place to put the sender. But as long as the readings are consistent, then I think that's the main thing.

I guess if someone were motivated, they could put temp senders in the head, the sump, turbo return line and before/ after the oil cooler and take all sorts of readings (hint hint ;)).

i would prolly be getting my readings from where my oil is being supplied from.... somwere between the oil pump and the rest of the engine.... rather then finding the oil temp after its passed through the entire engine....

What's your thinking behind that Jay?

For me, my concern is that synthetic oils begin to break down ALLEGEDLY at 150 degrees C and should be changed if they get hotter than that (this is based on advice from guys that I trust in rally circles, doesn't mean it's correct though). So I wanted to find out if my oil ever got that hot anywhere in the engine, hence my reason for wanting to stick the sender in oil return line from the turbo. By putting the sender just after the oil pump, I imagine it would see an average of the temp from the oil in the sump and any oil which has also been through an oil cooler (dunno if you are running one yet?). To me, this would jsut tell me how efficient the oil cooling system is, not whether the oil is approaching temperatures where it will start to degrade.

They're just my reasons for wanting to know oil temp. I could be way off in my thinking so curious to hear other's thoughts on the matter.

ahh the only reason i say that, we use oil as a cooling agent as well as a lube right? so wouldnt you rather know the oil temp before it reaches the main parts of the engine, thus why we have oil coolers attached to the oil filter housing before it reaches any part.

if the oil had reached ###deg (danger point) even before it reached the engine, i would be scared of damage it would be causing. oil will only start to degrade when it is under constant stress/heat. passing through an engine, it runs in a cycle where it is heated and cooled over and over, thus keeping is consistency to some degree.

taking an oil temp from a turbo return, just remember you also have water lines attached to the turbo housing, that will also determin the oil return temp.

its my theroy anyway....

You dont have to drill down on the hottest oil temp location as much as you are doing guys as the oil filter housing is fine IMO. As Rob said if you are getting temps of 130-150 degrees its time to consider more adequate cooling and a change of oil.

cheers, can i just buy the sender? or where can i one?

usually it comes with the particular guage, dont think you can just buy any sender.
you might need to consult the manufacturer and get the sender that matches to your guage. :)

yes each gauge has to match up with a sending unit with the correct resistance or else the gauge will be completely off...

just wondering what a normal engine oil temp is, whats the most they will reach and what temp is normal operating temp.

whether you are stock or highly modded post it up please.. :)

cheers

Just as a wild guess. Are you on Supraforums as "The Godfather"?

You have a Gsr/Evo?

sorry to bring up an old topic but when you get a new oil filter housing assembly from mitsubishi for an evo 1-3, does that come with an oil thermostat already?

if so, where abouts is it located?

mines running a bit high on temp, around 96 crusing and 100-102 when driven hard. my temp sensor is located on the oil filter housing assembly.

i was thinkin of just taking the thermostat out but couldnt figure out where abouts it was located.
