Engine Wont Start

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

ive seen 2 teeth out fuck things up and cost people money i think from memory ive seen a magna bend valves at 1 tooth

i remember i did a 4g15 timing belt a while back ina ce lancer glxi and it was one tooth out but when i wound it over by hand it lined up with the timing marks. took it for a test drive all sweet came back on the monday lacking power. camshaft was out 1 tooth. im a first year apprentice and ill totally agree on using a owners manual or at least diagrams till you know what your doing.

^^ You didn't set the belt tension up properly, allowing the belt to slip 1 tooth when the belt sags when the engine isn't on compression.
Magna's will not bend at 1 tooth, I've had 3 apprentices fuck up Magna 3.5L belts, one even slipped 9 teeth on the rear bank! Replaced the belt and it ran perfectly. 2 teeth wont bend valves, it will make it run like shit though.
It really comes down to luck, exactly where the piston/valve is when it happens and if it is auto or manual.

Hey VR4 is up and running again, but discovered need new front wheel bearings cos the wheel is moving around a bit after being put on, and need new tyres and rear cv joints...

took the vr4 for a quick drive and its making this weird loud metallic noise at about 3500-4000 rpm

Sounds like the Balance shaft is out of orientation. Off comes the timing belt again. You should look into someone qualified doing it for you.

yer im about ready to chuck it into a workshop and say fix it! haha
so the balance shaft... how easy to fix

timing belt assy off, then its there with just a tensioner holding it in, mate download the workshop manual, its easy to follow and you cant go wrong..

can't go wrong?

things can go very very wrong...

take it to a qualified mechanic who has done a 4g63 timing belt before.

Lots of things can go very very wrong. Stop fucking around with something you don't know about before you break it, I'm suprised you havent mashed anything yet.
Take it to a Mitsu dealership or Steve Knight RaceTech in Lonsdale. I would offer to do it for you but I'm flat out with other work.

the only way to learn is to try it..
imo its not that hard and if i can build 2 engines, and do multiple timing belts with no prior knowledge.. then i do feel anyone can
call it luck or whatever but if you read and follow the manual correctly then their is NO reason you can do it yourself

your always better off taking it to someone who knows what there doing, They can do the job properly and see if anything else is wrong.
