I Dont expect a quick reply here to this one, but has anyone made a profession through any engineering like mech/civil enginnering or materials/metallurgy.?

Im doing it at uni now and looking for career pathways, anyone that can speak advice of it may be helpfull

Cheers

Jamie.

yeah there is guys out there that do this.

eg; if and engine fails due to a suspected faulty part these guys give a report on what and why they think a certain part has failed and if it has caused the engine to die.

there is only two places in melbourne that do this as far as i know.

I work for the Roads and Traffic Authority and work with plenty of Civil engineers in my office and an electrical engineer. We do road, bridge and traffic signal construction and maintenance. We get uni students come in through the graduate program and they can spend up to 6 months doing a role in one area then move onto another area for some more experience. Most of the time (because the RTA is a pretty large organsiation) we have guys retire leaving vacancies for young engineers to step in as a Grade 1 or 2. There's plenty of experience to be achieved. However, we have had some young single grads who have stepped into engineer positoins leave for overseas positions because they get offered damn good money. One of our young maintenance engineers was recently offered a position in Dubai for some big bucks and he took it. I suppose if you dont have family or a girlfriend or any ties keeping you in Australia you have the word at your feet. In QLD you have your own transport authority so you could speak with their HR representative about what their program offers and when they take in new grads :D

thanks guys, ive been in touch with main roads up here, am looking at getting in with them for now

You're talking about stress testing of castings and so forth? Most of that R&D work is offshore. There's a LOT of metallurgy work in the mining arm of the economy tho but most of that is related to processing for ore and methods for increasing production/%retrieval.

Depends what you're into. One of my best mates is just about to graduate and starts next yr on 93k...

93k to be told by the operators to stay in your office and don't rock the boat then go and cry to mangement coz they won't listen

Yeah there is alot to do with mining, theres actually a Uni in ballarat or bendigo, down near you that offers mettalurgy as a degree....Im not sure which way Im gonna go yet, construction mangement is tempting because of the money...
