yeah as people have said people do it mainly in the US to make more room for a big ass turbo and dump setup. weight would be a very very small factor. and the last and my main reason is because of heat. i have gone through 5 alts now since i had my turbo engine in, mainly because of the dump pipe i run sits about 15mm away from it, even with a heat shield i have trouble still with killing them.

anyway, i have read about trouble with clearance issues on the US DSM models, but nothing yet on anything we have over here.

dan, are you able to share with us what happened? if not can you just send me a PM with a couple of details? weather i get others interested or not ill still buy one, i need one and making my own proves very hard to get something straight.

He broke the part that bolts the driveshaft to the block. 2 now. I still think somehow its been installed wrong!?

Installed wrong??? its pretty straighforward - every part/bolt in the kit can only go in one spot, and the kit comes with instructions anyway!

Barry seems to think my harmonic balancer is out, and causing too much vibration to the entire alternator assembly - which is in turn over time causing this bracket to break. Ive got a fluidampr one on its way and a new bracket made out of steel alloy (not aluminium) so hopefully no more problems for me :?

Yes well its not designed for a CC GSR is it? Perhaps its a few mm out at a particular angle, causing it to snap......?

Just seems weird how you've broken 2, already.

They were made for 1G and 2G DSM's ...

More specifically, 1G and 2G motors - regardless of what car they are in, that shouldn't matter.

If you have a look at some pics of one installed on a DSM theres actually much more clearance in a CC lancer & VR4 bay.

mine seems to be holding up fine so far... *touch wood*

The springy motors guys noticed that Dan's alternator was wobbling quite alot with the kit.

Mine looks fine,no vibration whatsoever, so it may possibly be the harmonic balancer.

As for installation, they only bolt up one way, and Dan is using a VR4 motor so it has been designed for his application.

does any one have a 2g kit fitted to and evo 7 bolt engine
with evo driveshafts?

or does anyone have a ic of the kit installed with the intermediate shaft in place(bolted to the block)

The issue i have is that the alternator bracket that bolts to the block has a step on it where the intermediate shaft bolts up.
the is a problem because the evo shaft is designed to bolt up to a flat surface. when you sit the shaft up it leaves a gap behind one of the bolts and it can be spaced up because it will put the shaft on the wrong angle.
does the vr4 intermediate shaft have a stepped bracket or flat like the evo too???

well there you go. thanks for confirming mate.

evo intermediates dont have a step as the original a/c bracket is
8mm wide over both bolt holes.

i am going to have to mill the bracket down for the front bolt to sit up flush now....

anyone fitted one to an evo before? i would be keen to know what you did to make it fit

cheers

more room for the dump pipe,
less heat on alternator and loom from said dump pipe,
more room for different intercooler pipe route,
weight of alternator back further in the car

OK so the main reason people would be going down this path is for the simple reason of gaining more space to run steam pipe dump pipes and forgoing the air con.

Makes sence, but obviously not a mod for the air con lovers :D

My steam pipe manny locates the turbo a bit more toward the gearbox leaving some good space out back for the 3" dump pipe bend and fitment of the external wastegate which just clears the power steering pump by a few mm. I love aircon so the alternator is gonna stay where it was factory intended :D I'd imagine the aircon relocation kit is for guys south of the border where 'humidity' is a word seldom used lol :p

i did post this in my build thread but i though i would put in in here too.

an update on this for people wanting to use one of these kits on a car running evo driveshafts(intermediate shaft to be exact).

it appears that the us cars and galant vr4s run a stepped intermediate shaft which the early evo does not, it has a flat face to bolt up to.

alot of material has to be removed to let the shaft bolt up correctly...
it means that its not a bolt up and requires extra work to fit to an evo shafted motor, and adds to the cost of course

more info for fitment onto a 7 bolt evo motor

the supplied belt for the power steering is too long for the evo too at 4pk1130. i have used a 4pk1090 but i reckon i 1080 would be ideal
as it would keep the pump as close as possible to the block
