Hey guys as my evo 1 has just been written off I'm in the market for a new car. Been looking at a few different makes and models, I'm considering an EVO 8 and noticed the earlier ones are 6 speed manuals and the 04-05s are 5 speed, or does it depend if it's Jap spec or Aus spec? Either way i just wanted to know which is the better gearbox? which holds more power? Tried looking but couldn't find another thread on this.

cheers
Mike

if the budget will stretch to a nine....get that over the eight. Ive had an eight....nice but it never really "grew" on me. Should have got the nine...better low down response

6 speed are known to be weaker then the 5 speed but people are still making massive power on both, just depends on how you drive it....

evo 4 5 6 = 5 speed , evo 7 = 5 speed, Aus delivered evo 8 = 5 speed, jdm evo gsr + mr 8 9 = 6 speed, evo X 5 speed , you can get conversion kits fitted for about 4-5k from 6 to 5 speed

5 speed and the Aus spec are normally in better nik
Aspec 8's comand a higher price, same as aus spec TME's over Jspec TME's holding higher value due to limited numbers produced for Aust market only (Aspec 8 = 5speed, wider front seats for big aussie asses ect are just a few diff's)

6 speed are known to be weaker then the 5 speed but people are still making massive power on both, just depends on how you drive it....
The 6 speed is made from the same bell housing casting just machine out more to allow the adding of a little extra space for the 6 gears, also to add why they are weak (Don't take punishment) is that to wedge in an extra gear set into the box required still required thinner gearsets = weaker gear cogs ect.

so did they improve the 6sp in the Evo 9 over the 6sp in the Evo 8 then?
NO same same, some variances have different ratio's of teeth in a couple of cogs.

evo 4 5 6 = 5 speed , evo 7 = 5 speed, Aus delivered evo 8 = 5 speed, jdm evo gsr + mr 8 9 = 6 speed, evo X 5 speed , you can get conversion kits fitted for about 4-5k from 6 to 5 speed

A conversion kit doesn't weigh up at all when you can buy a out of the box through Ralliart for 5-5.5k max its a no brainer buy new sell out old = new 5 speed and recoup some funds back after selling the 6speed box.

PN: you will need a evo7 5 speed shifter and center console surround also, the 6 speed wont work with a 5speed box and either will the 8 shifter console fit over a 5speed shifter.

;) happy days - there's your options in a 30 second nut shell.-

cool some really good info there Liberoz...I'm checking out a nice 05 EVO 8 Auspec 5sp today, completely standard with full service history looks to be a very tidy car!

but what about diff and transfercase?

I think that the complete swap would be still cheaper and includes a new clutch plus fluids , and thats a fitted price too

and will include the shifter too
