If you were going to build a track/hill climb/ touring events car and you have 30k to spend.

Do you buy a EVO VI and carry out basic mods or do you buy a cheap EVO II and modify it? Which is going to perform better and be more reliable?

Answers why would be good.

From what I can tell I would have roughly a extra 10-12k in modifications to the EVO II over the EVO VI but the VI has the better brakes, engine etc.

Assuming purchase price of the VI at 22-24k.
Assuming purchase price of the II at 12-14k.(Can be a GSR converted if it has full running gear)

If you wanted to build a track car, i'd suggest getting a race/rally only EVO 3 landed for around $10k, then spend:

$7k on supporting mods- clutch, cams, turbo, exhaust, intake, FMIC/piping, wastegate, fuel system

$6k on a decent cage, handling and suspension components

$3k on brakes, 6-pots, rotors pads, fluid

$3k on some wheels to fit over your 6-pot brakes and some decent tyres

$1k on a front LSD

An EVO VI would be good, but unless you buy a race/rally only one already done and had the money spent on it, then you're not going to really get much for $30k, and for the cash, IMO the E3 would be way much more of a weapon!

evo 2 will also cheaper to maintain,

i just went through the same process and decided the 2 was
the best option for me.

things like gear box rebuilds, diff rebuilds etc.. about half
the price on the early cars

your answer lies in the first line above.

you can easily upgrade the evo II brakes to shit on the evo VI standard brakes with all that extra spending money... and i dunno about the evo vi engine being 'better' - maybe less kms and newer.

put it this way, you get an evo VI , with that small amount of leftover money it will still be near stock at the end of it all, and chances are you'll continue to spend and go way over budget just to be happy with it, whereas like dre said - break it down and look at what mods you can do on the evo ii with all that leftover $$$$

agreed with dre...

older evo they are also lighter to begin with...

but the newer engines can take alot more beating and also get more power with less mods or so what ive seen...

Totally....

You can by cars already built ready for the track, with a cage, racing bucket, harness and all that jazz. Unless you have really specific needs, I'd buy a pre built car and get some one who know EVOs REALLY REALLY well to inspect for you...

Thanks for all the responses.

I think I will probably start with a blankish canvas.

I am not looking for it to be daily driven and I want to spend a bit of time getting it all up and running, more as a hobby then a target.

Once I buy a car etc I will post up some pictures. Hopefully be ready for the Coastal Challenge or Pittsworth sprints next year.

Cheers
