hey im just wondering how many mufflers/resonators you guys have fitted to your exhaust systems??

building my own system and just wondering what the best setup is for low noise??

cheers! :D

well right now i have 2 mufflers: the turbo and the cat.......so yeah anything thats sorta near the legal decibel mark im good with!

i was thinkin of a big 15-20 inch resonator just after the cat...if they come that big...lol

kaya.

I had 1 resonator, and thats it. The cat robs you of LOTS of power!!!!!

For low noise, a cat with 2x 15" resonators should do the trick!!!

dre

yeah i can imagine the cat would rob you of a fair bit of power!

thats what theyre bloody desighned to do! the bastards! :p

but yeah i dont really have any space for 2 resonators anyway! so ill just go with one nice big fat one!

cheers! :D

You can buy an Apexi exhaust valve controller if your really worried about sound. I don't run any sound increased deadening in my exhaust, just a cat and muffler but my mate who owns a 705hp Supra had the apexi controller fitted to keep the cops at bay.

That sounds like quite a good idea! i never thought of that!

spose that can be a really good tool to keep the pigs off the old back! without it being permanent! :D

u know how much theyre worth??

think he paid around the $500 mark. they are a very intellegent addition, able to be set to automatically adjust the valves state by RPM level.

i have them Cat, + a Canon at the end.

Yes its loud (Everyone knows it is :) )

DUDE
You are in Darwin, never did i get a 2nd look from the coppers up there, passed MVRs ear test and all
Loud isnt a issue for rego up there :D

how big is the piping your planning to be using? and how long approx is the entire exhaust system gonna be including the cat? and what style mufflers are you going to use

as for my exhaust i'm only running 1 high flow muffler 2.25" plus a racing cat and its dead silence at idle and at 5000rpm the engine is still louder then the exhaust

i built a full 3" system with a Xforce racing cat, for a MK2 supra with a 7mgte about a week ago using only 1 Blitz oval muffler at the end, it roars but police have already tried to epa the car but it only reached 85db,

its not how many mufflers you have, its were you place them along the exhaust system

TURBO CAR
Resonator and muffler will lead to a very quiet combination.
The larger the pipe diameter.the louder it becomes. You can get away with no muffler,But a full 3inch system without it will have your car sounding like a tractor and it will be a cop magnet.
best bet,No resi and a proper muffler.

ATMO CAR
Make sure you have a resonator,And a muffler, since there is no rear turbine wheel to block noise it will be very loud and no resonator leads to a disgusting raspy shithouse note heard on most civics with a cheap system.Cant skimp her,For NA's its both.

As for a cat,Dig into your pocket and buy a highflow stainless one,The flow loss is that marginal its negligent,OR Punch it out,and risk an EPA summons.

I aint got one....

nicely put, dont always need a res on a n/a, but you got to at least know what your doing and were to put things (physics class made it a lil easier)..... and yes that tin can noise from hondas are mostly there large cannon exhaust (2"-> 4" mega phone effect) and engines, most noise from hondas actually come from there intake mani/pod filter but meh......... i see you have also decided to "strangle" your cat too  exhaust note would sound good on boost.......

if any ones bored and i mean bored, feel free to record your exhaust note and post it on here...... if any free time......or nuttin to do.......

yeah my exhaust sounds like a bloody tractor mixed in with a bit of out board motor aswell!

ill see how it goes when all the gaskets are actually fitted on there properly and ill go from there! but yeah as WRCVR4 said....the nt isnt the most stringent place in australia for regulations and all that....there was a green hq ute driving round darwin for a couple of months with the exhaust coming straight from the extractors! :?

it's one of those drag monsters that wheelspins off idle and had big as slicks on the rear and pizza cutters on the front! so if that thing didint get pulled up for being too loud i think ill be fine...also since my tip dumps straight to the ground too! 8)

this calls for some trial and error i guess! :D

cheers!

Yes,The remove of the cat gives it a Major bark..Sounds like an SR.
What u said about the physics and the gas flow is interesting. You can actually change the note and the sound of the exhaust due to the length of the pipe before and after the muffler and resi etc..

My mate has a 32 and when it was stock it had a 3 inch dump, through to a resi through to a 4 inch pipe,no muffler,no other 32 sounds like it,not even gtr's,its souns better, all i could put it down to is length of pipe between resi, turbo, rear bar etc...

how much room do u think there is under a nimbus for resonators-mufflers! lol!

so what youre saying jap63 is that the further the resonator is away from the tip the deeper the sound gets?? :?

cheers for the advise! :D

theres no room under a vr4 for mufflers or resonators

what makes u say that? the factory exhaust included a resonator.

With resonators, the placement of it along the exhaust is very important. As they work by reflecting sound waves back, the further back the resonator, the lower frequencies it cancels out. The best bet is to get the position close to the factory location as that is probably located to work best at cruising speeds.

a 3" resonator will fit in the factory location?
