Hi guys i have finally finished rebuilding my engine for the e39a and my friend has given me his near new gt28rs bb turbo . My engine has a stock EVO 3 manifold and turbo . The Garrett has a t25 flange and I was wondering if anyone knew where to source an adapter plate ?

Also for this turbo should I just gave the ecu chipped or should I get the Dsm link from the states ?

You don't need a chip/ECM link to change a turbo. If you are just going to run it the same with the same setup you have - just change the turbo over. However, if you want to get the most out of it - or even from the E3 turbo for that matter, you need the supporting mods. 055/EVO AFM, 560cc injectors, walbro pump, fpr, E3 or 2.5"-3" dump, TB elbow... and probably a few other bits and bobs to sweeten the deal. These would be a minimum IMO and a starting point. I'm guessing you have ARP studs already as the engine is rebuilt. As for the EXH mani I'm not 100% sure but I think you need to go a custom/new manifold.

Are the GT28's much bigger than an E3 turbo?

For all the stuffing around with adapters to fit you manifold, then the work require on the O2 housing ect, just bolt up an evo 3 16g and and evo 3 O2 housing and you away.
They are rated very similar power outputs. Some of the US companies (forced performance was one) made gt28 turbo to fit dsm's / vr4 and early evo, but the E3 16g was much more popular in the end.

Sell it.

I have a full Genuine Garrett GT2860RS old setup on my VR4 4g63 in cc gsr, It has a flange adaptor that a fabricator made to suite the factory manifold. I can post some pics of what it looked like? It was pritty simple setup that worked fine,

Things I found out.......

My 4g63 was in a cc gsr so there is bugger all room to start with however, the internal waste gate accuator was remounted further forward on the front of the turbo housing as with the gsr with factory radiator and fan shrouding the accuator toched the fan, Im not to sure how much room there is in a vr4 but all we did was grind a secton or grove in each fan blade so as the fan spun it didnt touch any more.

if you dont want to muck around with it Ill be selling my setup that already bolts on to the factory manifold without modification that includes, adaptor flange, Near New Garrett GT2860RS, Dump pipe, Ally Intake pipe and 5 inch K&S Pod, Its been fitted and driven on a car and all sorted out if your intrested. PM me

I was using a Haltec e6x ECU at the time with that setup and thats all pulled out sitting in the shed never got around to sell it, and it ran well with that setup, Im upgrading to the Platnum 1000 now with the new setup.

Thanks for the info guys, I might just bolt up the E3 turbo and manifold to get the new engine run in . I brought it with a blown head Gasket and havent actually had it drive able yet . Will have to see what sort of condition the gearbox ,diff and transfer case is in.

During a run in, it's advised to run a turbo you are happy to kill or don't give a shit about or no turbo at all. I know of at least 2 people that haven't done this and was told it was OK and both ended up with a dead turbo. One gt30 (swarf blocks the small oil inlet and starves the turbo of oil - exactly what happened, dead turbo) and one 20g (swarf gets in the sleeve bearings/internals and scores them - excessive wear and blowing white smoke). TBH I don't know many people that have gone through a full rebuild aside from these 2 but other reading lead me to believe this would/could/might happen so I wouldn't risk it. Both were 4G63T's
