as the title says guys i have just fitted a gsr gearbox to my vr4 and now no longer have 1,3,5 gears. all were working fine when i pulled out of gsr lancer. i have tried adjusting linkage to no avail. i have however just realised i have put 90w lsd oil in the box...will this affect it?

the noise is a synchro nois it just buzzez but wont go into gear.

all help appreaciated.

The lsd oil won't be helping anything. Drain it and refill with correct oil for a start.
Will it go into those gears with the car turned off then stay in gear once you start the car?

it would seem one of your cables is too short and isnt pushing the lever far enough to engage the gear. to check that take the cable off the linkage and select first gear on the manually on the gearbox...then get some one in the car to put the gear lever in the first gear position.

wouldnt that mean 2,4, and reverse would be affected as well?

at the box there are adjusters just before the gearbox linkage.....previous owner had a cable snap and got custom ones made up. this was way before problem occurred

Ok, as Brian said, remove the shift cable from the box and manually select 1st gear. Then get someone to sit in the car and try to 'select' 1st gear without the cable attached at the gearbox end.
Compare the position of the pin on the shift lever with the end of the cable and see if there is any difference in distance between the 2.

I'd be adjusting the shift cables inside the car right at the shifter too.

as said before, try shifting gearbox levers my hand with the cables disconnected and see how easy it is.
is it the same shift hardness with motor running and not running?
I remember reading an article when looking for the part number of my gearbox, that some gearboxes have 1 longer lever on the gearbox itself.so that would mean that the gearstick shifter levearage point woudnt have enough movement.you can apparantly tell if you look at the box,one will be a lot longer when i saw the pictures.

ok recent update,
i compared shifters from gsr to vr4 and there was a huge differance. i have now installed the gsr shifter into the vr4 with a bit of modifiing. my little girl demanded my attention for a while so i will adjust the cables tomorrow and let use know how it goes.

ok good news and bad news.... good news is i now have all gears due to some dodgy modifying on my behalef. i will post some photos later and explain how i did it for referance if someone wants to do the same thing later (dont recommend it).
bad news the car although picking gears and driving appears to be binding in the driveline some how. almost like im running different size tyres (im not). any sugestions.
im now running a vr4 diff in the rear with a vr4 transfer case and a gsr gearbox.

It never ends huh??
Seems to be the way with these cars, just get one thing sorted and then something else wants to play games with your head!!!!

the vr4 started out as an auto jap spec vr4, it was then converted to a manual. then a rs 16g spec motor was put in. after that a aus spec vr4 gearbox was put in with no such problems. i have now got an aus spec gsr box in. or at least i hope anyway. ill have to check as it is the second gearbox ive put in the gsr. dam i break some shit.

post the gearbox code up of the gsr box you have put in, the full thing, W5M33 xxxx that will tell for sure, unless its been opened and changed.

if its binding, you either have the wrong transfer case or wrong front diff ratio, or a different rear diff ratio than you think.

can really only be one or a combination of the three.

"apparently" there are is different transfer case ratio, i have never come across it, but it was worth mentioning as something to check.

but that all depends on the gearbox you have, W5M33 xxxx???
