gearbox rebuild (Nimbus)

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

It has been such a long time since I have looked at a UC Nimbus. I think it has a similar box to a TM Magna. I this is correct, then you really do need to change the box for something more modern. But I think the chassis rails are to close together to fit a VR4 or EVO box. I am not in the position to confirm any of this information.
I think the most practical box to look at would be the TN-TP Magna. This has cable shift and hydraulic clutch. This is the biggest FWD box and the cheapest (still no idea wether it will clear the chassis rail) sorry I can't be of more help.

hey!

the nimbus chassis is the same as a cordia's one if that helps....

and the magna boxes are too long for the cordia chassis rails so i suspect it woud be the same for the nimbus.

is there anything wrong with having a physically smaller gearbox??

would it just be a structural thing or are the gears in the bigger boxes beefier?? :?

i dunno what to do about it..... :(

Yeah, I thought so. It's just that those early boxes are such a bad design.
I guess you are stuck with it. I used to be able to build em pretty strong, but I haven't touched one in ten years. Sorry mate that I can't be of much help to you, maybe the boys on the Cordia forums can give you some advice.

what about using like the proton or hyundai FWD boxes??

some of them are pretty simillar to mitsi ones!

also im pretty sure the galant GSR boxes are the same as a nimbus one but stronger internally and have hydraulic clutches.......i dont mind converting to hydraulic clutch either! coz i have the whole setup from the VR4 donor car...except the pedal... :D

churrs!

kaya.

GGSR boxes aren't half bad. Mine lasted a fair amount of torture between rebuilds...

The gearbox on my mum's 01 Hyundai Lantra J2 GLS is awesome. Snaps gears like a champ with a stock clutch after god knows how many kms still. :)

But it's on a 4g63 that's the other way around. like the late model evos.

Na, Proton and Hyundai boxes are the same as 4G63, 4G15, 4G93 boxes in the CC Lancer range as they are a direct bolt in replacement and basically used on Mitsu engines anyway.

im thinking about the galant gsr box....i can swap over to hydraulic clutch no worries.....at least then i have a more reliable box thats built to take a little more power (i think)

mr gears, have you worked on these boxes much? and are there many options in beefing up their cogs and diff??

also what oil should i be using....coz i was uzing pennzoil 80w85 tranny fluid...but i was told that it is too thin to take so much power.

also in the blown box, i changed the fluid of it just before it gave way and it was filled with tiny particles smaller than sand that were silver and bronze in colour....im guessing its the synchros and gears just eating into themselves?

thanks for your help so far boys! :D

cheers! kaya.

also if it helps...i have a twin plate OS giken clutch (the one with the pressed steel face, not the anodised alloy one)

i think thats one of the reasons why the box died too!

should i sell that one and get a heavy duty organic one? coz thats what someone told me to do....

cheers.
