Hey guys. Just wanting some info that would be real handy for me.

I was wondering how dificult it is to change the gearbox on a galant vr4? ive done one 4wd at my old work but that wasnt all that easy as we removed the engine and gear box together out of a patrol (for those who know what a shitter it is out of them)

Anyway, im a 2nd year mech and have done heaps of front wheel drive box's but done only few four and rear wheel drivers.

On a final note, is there anyone in melb that has a place suitable (with hoist) or a workshop i could use for a weekend or willing to give me a helping hand. Willing to return a favour, and give you a bit of cesh, or a sexual favour

Thanks
Nathan

Lorrie has a hoist.

Ask him

Ask barry (bazeng).

My hoist is unavailable to anyone except me and even then I have to have prior arrangement!

The gearbox is the same as any FWD gearbox, except you unbolt the transfer first.

Other than that, simple.

AND the exhaust. Its easier

hey guys thanks for that. Ill ask baz.

Although, im not totally sure that it is my gearbox that is rooted. My car is extremely hard to put into first and second gear. When you are driving it it makes all sorts of noises, like a constant grinding sound, slight clunking etc. and it wouldnt go into first gear on the move. Also is almost impossible to put the car in first 2nd or 3rd even when the car is off.

I stopped the car and opened the bonnet as i heard a knock, put my head above the rockercover near the cams, clunk clunk clunk...fuck...engines got a knock...............which i thought anyway. So then i had a listen to the gear box on the drivers side and it was the clunking and knocking sound coming from it! while the car was idling  wtf? relieved but still worried.

any ideas etc would be great, or what it could be.
Thanks nathan

Is that because it doesnt exist?

It's my best friends dad's workshop actually. A local exhaust shop.

I used to have one in the shed here but it broke and was removed.

Any other stupid comments dre?

As was stated earlier is exactly the same a front wheel drive gearbox, the only difference being you need to undo the transfer and slide the tail shaft out.

Other than that just pull out the front driveshafts, undo all the bolts, tilt the engine a little and wiggle the box free :)

I did mine on the ground and it wasn't that hard (how different is the GSR to the Galant??) So you don't really need a hoist, it just helps, especially if you have access to a FWD gearbox lift especially when it comes to re-install.

Just make sure the car is supported in stands at a decent height so there is room to lie underneath and it should be easy :)

hey mate, yeah had a look today very simular, thought it would differ. Only reason im hesitating on pulling the box out atm is because i am uncertain that it is the gearbox, so ill check a few things over on it after work

Your so full of crap!

You told us it was brand new?

You dont just remove a hoist when it breaks- you fix it!

Some of these noises and selection problems can be caused by the clutch plate dampner springs falling out and jamming up the clutch.(this doesn't explain why you can't select all the gears with the engine turned off)
When you get the box out, turn the shaft and go through the gears.
If the clutch is stuffed and the box feels alright, then you know what to do.
If the clutch is good and the box feels bad then...strip it down.

Thanks for the replies fellas. Took it for another drive today and had a bit more information. The clutch has about 40mm of freeplay up the top. selector forks and working etc. Start the car and you can hear a grinding sound, clutch out in nutral and it will go away, clutch in and a horrible grinding sound appears, as if its scraping on the flywheel. Also took it for a further drive to see if it would get worse or not, went to take off and the rear end was shuddering, like the wheels were bouncing like ur in a too low gear at a low speed, few clunks here and there, etc.

Anyway going to take the box off and have a geeze soon i hope if i can get a place to work on it. I dont have a house anymore so not living anywhere at the moment,
