Hey guys, has anyone tried running with a stock gsr lancer bonnet with the 4G63?

I seem to recall someone saying it could be done, with the upper timing cover off.... but cant remember exactly....

would help in my quest to achieve full red-ness by the end of the week :)

with out cover i think it will fit,

but i have seen some cars with the support frame cut out also,
not sure if that is required or not

ive heard you need to use a vr4 engine mount (not sure which one) to lower the height of the engine so it doesnt stick out so much. You may also need to cut some of the support bars on the gsr bonnet, where it closes over the timing belt cover.

the vr4 mount :)

DOH!

you can see how much clearance i have in this pic

when i had stock bonnet, this is how i got away with it:

- i had vr4 engine mounts, but i think it was dodged up by the bloke who installed the motor
- I also cut out the support on the bonnet where the timing cover hit (i always left the cover on)
- the bonnet shut, but it was still elevated a SLIGHT bit.

then when meek saw it, he was saying its no good to have the engine mounted unevenly like that (like you could tell the motor was lower on the right hand side as ive seen on other 2L installs with stock bonnet)
So i changed to evo mounts, and evo bonnet.

youve come this far with your car with such a top job... be a little more patient and just leave the engine mounts you got in it, and put the bonnet the motor was meant to pair with

the angle you speak of...looks something like this!!!

This was done by the guy i bought the car from...it used to vibrate like a d9 bulldozer from where the transfer case was sitting on the crossmember,my mechanic got me another set of mounts which levelled up the engine and still left a lot of clearance to the bonnet?

yeah the slant was something like that.. bad huh
re: the mount you had put in - cool. not sure what mounts he used

but what i do know is when i bought genuine evo engine mounts (still packaged) and had them fitted, it sat evenly and a lot higher with absolutely no clearance for the stock bonnet even with the support cut out - hence changing the bonnet.

GSR50L:
you already have the evo mounts and the bonnet ready to go... i wouldnt spend more money and hassles on other mounts, nor would i run with no cam cover - id rather just get the bonnet sprayed for $300 when the cash flows in - you already have the guards, front bar.. id stay genuine evo bonnet

gsrsol at last resort use longer bolts on the hinges and use either washers or nuts to space it up at the hinges, you still may have to cut the under bonnet support tho but you will achieve the gsr red bonnet with the evo motor and mounts.

stop worrying you egg! vic roads cant and wont give you grief because your bonnet isn't painted

$8 can of flat black will make it good enough!
I heard the one about jacking the bonnet up on rear, cutting the under side of the standard bonnet framework, but if you think about it these will give a more bodgy look than a black bonnet that all lines up (shuts properly and is bolted on correctly

I had a evo engine and evo mounts.

All I did was cut the bonnet support out and had a new one welded in and painted. The new support was flat against the bonnet.

Just to be safe I also wound the rubber stoppers up although it probably did nothing.

unless you moved the bonnet catch? yes... nothing but make the bonnet firmer to close and latch.
