I've got a gsr box with a busted centre.

For racing proposes (mainly 1/4mile) what is better a welded centre or replacing the busted spider gear or what eva needs to be replaced?

Cheers.

Yep can u can see the spider gear is stuffed.. It's a pain in the arse as I brought this box, from an older 4g member and was told there was nothing wrong with it, then used it for a daily for less then a week and it was stuffed

I'll look at it better soon but the centre is definitely stuffed

Brian did a good job on that vce. Its still in my car.....
Being only a old 93 and me driving like miss daisy has helped tho.

aldo says to take shaft/shafts with it to keep it aligned while welding.
I dunno if it needs preheat. I would imagine it will.

I could weld it myself but being a moving part, wasn't too keen on doing it myself. But will check it out can't be too hard right haha

But in saying that I've welded a Vcu up too. Brian also did my first one. And that is still just as strong

Like this...
Step 4: Be careful and first tack weld one spot on the lower pinion. It will then slightly rise on one end on an angle. Hit it back down and then tack weld in another spot.
Then check that the output pinion slides into the lower part of the centre diff ( to ensure youre not welding it on an angle), remove the output pinion and then continuing welding.
Step 2: Only put the viscous coupling on to tack weld the upper pinion onto the centre diff cover so the teeth are in alignment leading into step 3. Once you have a couple of tacks done, remove the VCU so you don't heat it up, then continue with welding all of step 3 completely.

if you're welding up the centre diff I think it would be worthwhile hacking up the VC and welding it up as well. would save a couple kilos as a minimum.

Or don't touch the VCU. Then if you don't like a welded centre or want to go back to an oem centre or a 4-spider centre, your VCU isn't foobar as you would still be able to use it. ;)
