Hello evervone here at team 4g. Danny from Ballarat. New to the forum. Really good website, nice to see so many other mitsu fans out there.

I dont know much about EVO's, and what bit goes on what else, but I have screwed a few motors together over time, so I hope I can help somebody.

Some that I've had: 2 RA colts, L 200 5 speed, L 300 van, HG Gallant (still in the back yard, growing mould) , MF Triton and currently in a MK Triton.

I was hoping that somebody could tell me which would be the best forum to find some info on a 4G64 (EFI 16V) burning oil on startup. I think it may have a tumor. If I must operate on it, I may as well make it sing better. Trouble is I dont know a) what best to do, b) where to get the right bits? Hoping you guys have a better idea than me.

Anyway, I'd like to hear from you and know what you are driving, or going to drive, and maybe what you done to it.

welcome aboard.. i'm sure you will find a wealth of knowledge on this site and many people from melbourne who can mostlikely lend a hand..

Mate , sounds like you have worn Valve stem seals.

I'm Jamie, I had (til last week) a black Evo III, now sold.
Welcome to the site, were all glad to help.

Jamie.

Thanks for the welcome guys. Some nice gear!

G'day Jamie. What are you going to replace the EVO with?

There is something going wrong in my motor. This is way beyond a puff, and no smoke on decelleration when its got the vac to do it. Let me describe:

Start motor dead cold. No smoke. 10 secs or so and it starts. Fills the driveway with smoke. Drive off, and smoke for about 30 secs, then slows and then stops. It wasnt this bad but its getting serious now.
Funny thing is thats it for smoke. could drive for miles and not use a drop of oil. It dosent happen until the next morning. Funnier thing, it dosnt do it as bad in the warm weather. Has to get below about 12 degrees overnight.

At this point Im sus on an oil control ring broken??? A break in the head gasket between an oil passage, a crack in the head, or all of these!

Is there any particular problem these motors are prone to?
Its not turbo...damn.

My project car at the moment, don't shoot me down here for another brand, is a 1975 Valliant Sportsman Charger. Got a long way to go.
Anyway, have a good weekend.

hahah, your project car will not be open for criticism, not here, this site is open to many type, we are not close minded, but rather like minded.
As for what will replace the Evo, hopefully a 9 or 10 once my engineering degree is complete.

Now, to that problem..is the smoke Blue or black/grey?

If its blue its definately oil mate...however black/grey will indicate large overfuelling..
I have heard of the switch attached to the radiator for "engine temp' sometimes faulting and causing massive rich running until temp, smoking, and also over fueling.....

If you are not using oil though, id have to say that youre likely not burning it....so i guess it has to be determined.... what colour is the smoke? then we can know if its fuel or oil...U still have the PCV hooked up on the rocker cover still? another off putting point is that its worse when cold. Usually an oil issue is worst when the oil is hot and thinner.

It might be a good idea to start a thread in the technical area too, much advice and help can be sought there, and the area is often browsed by many helpfull people here. Its truly awesome to be amongst people that can help you sort the problems you once thought were too hard to diagnose, this site has set my mechanic straight a few times, due to the depth of knowledge here, haha..enjoy..

Jamie.

Ps- a guy by the name of Lorie, (Entaran is his forum name) is in ballarat, he is kind like the Ex site founder/moderator, kinda a hard ass, and as fukn stuborn as a mule (he'll flame me 4 this lol), but a good person with a good heart and a depth of info and knowledge. He may be able to help you out...he's helped me before when i needed it, and been a good source of info
PM me if youd like his Msn contact.

An old mouldy HG galant eh... sounds like you might like someone to come take it off your hands!!.......

Yeah mate, gum trees do great things for mould. I used to really like driving the old girl. Gave over 10 years good service. The missus mostly drove it. Retired it in 05.

I often thought of doing a VR4 hatch, but the missus was happy, and thats worth more than gold (and about as common)

Thanks for the welcome, and if you do want to take it off my hands, send a PM.

I started a thread about the triton in the tech section. Feel free to impart your wisdom peoples, as there is lots here.
