Hey, my name is mat, live on the mid north coast of nsw, have owned a cordia turbo, a magna sports and vrx and now I am looking at a 1993 lancer gsr

http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/wauchope/cars-vans-utes/mitsubishi-gsr-lancer-1993-awd-turbo-1-8l/1046867108

i hope that works...

anyway i just had a couple of questions

is there anyway to know if the km's on the car are true, does the gsr come with a 240k speedo?
is there anything on this particular car that looks odd or would need further investigation by looking at the pics?
is there a way to tell if the roof has been replaced due to rusty roof?

i would like to replace the front bumper with the gsr one for the time being as it will be a daily and will be going down 40kms of dirt road a day, ill keep the other bumper for when it becomes a weekend car later down the track, are the gsr bumpers easy to come by, are they the same as the stock lancer ones?

any other info would be greatly appreciated as to what are common issues with these cars

thanks in advance
mat

Hi Mat,

Welcome to the forum:
  • The aus spec GSRs came with a 240km/hr speedo - you can tell if it's an aus spec as the aerial will be on the A-Pillar;
  • No real way of guaranteeing the kms shown are the genuine kms or not;
  • Re the roof, you will probably have to either remove the headliner to see if there are signs of it being replaced or carefully inspect the exterior to check for any differences in paint;
GSR front bumper should be relatively easy to come by, there are a couple of guys here selling them. I think they are different to the standard sedan bumpers and I think the grilles are different too.

In terms of what to look for in regards to other issues, there are the usual things you would expect from a car that is 20 years old, best bet would perhaps have it inspected by a workshop for a full report on what the condition of things are. It can be tough (and expensive) finding replacement mechanical bits that are in a good, useable condition.

I can put any number on the odo you want and all lined up perfect.

People seem to chase power window switches so check them.

I suggest a wet and dry compression test for the engine, few figure 8s to test cvs, test drive for gearbox, brakes and steering and smoky exhaust. And check everything works.

lol
thanks everyone for you replys, ill most likely get a pre purchase inspection just to be safe, just need to find someone in that area that will do it
if all goes well hopefully ill be around here more often

hey everyone, i went and looked at the car today, it seems to be pretty good from what i could see
some things i picked up on are that alot of the plastic pieces seem to be broken - the plastic surround around the door handle, the power window switch ( the plastic around the buttons on the driver side), the plastic foot piece under the left hand back door, the glove compartment had fallen off, on the exterior - one side of the plastic piece that runs across the gutter rail from front windscreen to rear windscreen was missing,

are any of these pieces hard to come by?

there seemed to be a little rust, no bubbles or anything where the plastic gutter rail strip should be, fair few brackets in the engine bay where rusty.
clutch seemed a little heavy, are they normally or could it be a heavy duty clutch
gears seemed a little rigid if that makes sense, is this normal? it went into gear but took a tiny bit of persuasion

also in the engine bay behind the part i have circled it goes into the firewall there seemed to be no paint around that part

anyway any info would be good, ill still most likely get a mechanic to check it over but they probably wont pick up on these small things
thanks mat

The bit you have circled is the clutch master cylinder. It is full of brake fluid and if it leaks it will remove paint from the firewall. Check the inside of the car at same spot. And the clutch bracket for cracks. The master may have been fixed/replaced already. Monitor fluid level to ascertain the leak
All is fixable fairly cheaply, but will require some cleaning first

hey everyone

i got a mechanic to check the car over and all that he could find was a tiny radiator leak and rust in the rear of the exhaust somewhere

so with that result i pick it up tomorrow :) ill post some pictures when i get it

thanks for everyones help

mat
