I went to remove my wheels the other day, and had much trouble removing the wheel nuts.

The wheel nuts were put on a couple of months ago by a proper tyre place, and in my opinion were on way too tight. I only just managed to get 3 of the nuts off (after a lot of pain and effort). The 4th nut however could not be removed.

I took it back to the tyre place, and they couldnt get it off either. Also noticed was the nut was slightly cracked. The tyre place said to get it off, I would need to leave it with them for a whole day, and they would need to drill it out. They would have to drill the entire stud though, which, due to the time this would take and the care required, would be a lengthy and expensive process.

The wheel nut is a lock nut, and the 'key' extension that you use only really fits into the nut about 1cm, so it doesnt sit in there vary nicely.

Does anyone have any better ideas of how to remove this nut?

I was thinking that another nut could be welded onto the end of the stuck nut, and then turned, however the heat from the welder would probably damage the rim.

hey gilly..
when i bought my rims, they put on crappy nuts and one of the threads got wrecked and i couldn't screw it out. my mechanic had to drill it out and replaced the whole stud. i don't think it was that expensive either..

any idea how much it cost?

I might need to speak to my mechanic. The tyre place said it might take all day.

The thread is still ok, so drilling it out would be the last resort.

Cheers for the input.

LOL We had this problem with trooper shannons vr4 when we stripped it.

soak in penetrant.

Find a close fitting socket(preferably one of the crap branded socket you dont care about)
Find the next size down in eithermetric or imperial.

FLOG it on with a hammer so its stuck on there.

Put a 1/2 inch breaker bar and a big F&ck off bar/extension and apply slow but increased torque untill it comes off(have the wheels on the ground and handbrake on obviously). when it comes off get a punch and put the socket in a viceand hit the socket off( hopefully it would have come off and the socket mighten be damaged)

Wear some safety glasses too

If that doesnt work go out and buy a new car

I mean go to the mechanic and get it driled off

cool, might give that a go.

Im a little concerned about damaging the wheel though. I guess I just need to be careful
