Idle Speed Control problems

4GTuner

Help Support 4GTuner:

okay after a few hours at the wreckers i discovered this

GSR ISC MOTOR is different to all cc and ce , length of plunger is bigger then most

but wait here more, althought the length is different the coils are the exact same! , so if you find a cc or ce isc motor just remove the coil and use the gsr plunger.... SUCCESS!

Funny experience with my GSR.

It sometimes has rough idle on startup. Even when warmed up can still idle rough. This is the interesting bit, if i have clutch pedal engaged and start etc, idle is perfect....

Im assuming the clutch adjustment is required in this case...?

Never start your car up with clutch engaged, its puts alot of strain and pressure on the journal/thrust bearing on the crank

^ indeed

wait are you telling him not to start up with clutch engaged ie clutch pedal out or engaged as in clutch pedal full depressed and clutch dissengaged?

Did you check the resistance on the coils of the isc?
There is a YouTube link on first page to show you how.

And even if you buy a new isc, there is no telling if you will fix it, you need to pop the top on the ecu and check for blown ic. As described on page 1.

Yeah, ill do all the checks before hand.

BTW, last night i changed top engine mount (Passenger side/Strut tower)... and it has not done it since..... coincidence ?
Also its now easier to get into 2nd gear.

The mount was so rooted that with new mount engine sat up 35mm

received this ecu with a clearly blown isc ic
ecucropped.jpg
pulled the bad teeth and though the bottom one looks ok, they are both blown

installed chip holders

and new ic's

fortunately, the circuit board tracks were ok and not blown, so that saved some time and effort. I also check the resistors (R223 and 224, also R77 and 78) and transistors that drive the ic's (Q9 and Q10) and check the other 3 installed ic's for correct internal resistance and continuity of the tracks. You may notice that most of the burnt black board has been cleaned up.
normally i would install this in my car and test it, but unfortunately my car is still out of action..

normally, there is a short in one of the coils in the idle speed controller. this causes extra power to flow through the coils and into the ecu. this is too much for the chips to handle and it cooks them.
but often these ecu seem to have done the rounds, so maybe was blown before. but if they blow like the pics above, they stink for a couple of days. its gross. you know something is cooked...

1st page has details (youtube video) on checking the isc with a multimeter.
get your isc up to spec, then if that hasnt made it idle nice and even with the isc plugged in or unplugged it no different, then better look inside ecu.

Stupid ecu.
How much does it cost to buy another factory one with no issues?

I dunno. I haven't played with the isc coils (Yet).
There is a few guys that say they should be replaced at 100k service.
I have thought about fusing the ecu so the ic's can't blow. Better would probably be a current limiter in the power wire to the isc.
But I need more time to think it through. Really, for me, it's not that big a issue to change them. But if tracks are burnt, or if more damage is done, them the ecu may be stuffed. A current limiter would fix the blown tracks issue for sure and might save the ic as well.

Did you measure your isc?

Ok my isc motor was dead went to wreckers and got one out of CE 2 door injected lancer.

Compared plungers 100% same, fitted it up and wallah works perfectly. Starts like a dream now!

I took few pics showing the difference and comparing of plungers. At first one looked longer than other, after you wind it out to its furthest point theyre exactly the same.

$45 solution ftw!
