So I saw a some of the LSD module things on ebay the other day from sellers in malaysia (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/JDM-Mitsubishi-Lancer-Evo-1-2-3-4G63-T-Viscous-LSD-Differential-Rear-Slip-Kits-/370941684982?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&hash=item565dd8ecf6&_uhb=1) and it got me thinking, is it possible to turn an open diff into an LSD one? My knowledge in this area is severely limited and I don't even know if this is possible. Do you just change out the centre of the diff with an LSD coupling and put the CV shafts into that? Tried using the search function, unfortunately neither 'LSD' or 'GSR' are legitimate search terms :fuuuuu:

Im not 100% on this but I think if you do change to lsd you would need to find the matching cv shafts because teeth are different but as I said not 100% sure so don't quote me on it

Yeah Ive seen that there for a while now.
See the words "VISCOUS" and "REAR SLIP KITS" in the auction title description? ..... BE VERY CAREFUL.

1. For starters, it could very well be just a second hand set of viscous LSD slip plates the auction is trying to sell (that goes into a viscous LSD)
2. The item pictured in the EBay auction is an EVO mechanical rear LSD (note the rectangle holes)
3. A Viscous rear LSD housing will have a large circle round hole in the side of it. (see attached pic). It would be from an EVO 1 GSR. Do not buy a rear viscous LSD unless it comes with the CV cups and axles.
4. If the description is incorrect but the picture is showing the actual item up for auction, then its an Evo mechanical rear LSD and you've snagged a bargain. You can easily pop this straight into your GSR rear diff housing just by removing your existing rear diff crownwheel from your existing GSR rear diff and then bolt the crownwheel onto the EVO Mech rear LSD - A straight up easy swap. There is no need to change rear cv cups or axles or anything.... well except some new bearings and new LSD diff oil of course lol.

You would be wise to contact the seller and ask him 'what exactly' is up for auction?

I'll have to message the seller and see what they say, its been on ebay for ages now so if it is a bargain I'm surprised no one has snatched it up yet.
I've read that clutch plate type LSDs require maintenance (changing of the clutch plates and stuff), how often does this need to be done? Is it like every 5,000 or 50,000? Or do they last forever as long as you dont thrash it
In hindsight I could just google that^

From that auction, you would be expecting to see a rear mech LSD with some bearing rust arrive at your door wouldn't you. Very easy EBay dispute if all that showed up was some viscous plates. Seller maybe thinks his mech is a viscous.

Yeah its been up for ages and I also thought the reason why it isn't selling is because the auction description and images don't match up.
Yeah LSD plates do wear out over time but if its from a road car chances are they're still good as many are still driving around these days without replacement. However if the LSD is from a competition car chances are its probably flogged out and worn. You could then probably purchase a new set of replacement plates, or use a rear diff oil like Redline Shockproof to make it bite better.

I bought one of these after contacting the seller who wasn't sure if viscous or plate type LSD.
they said what was in picture was the item for sale. and it was just that, a plate type evo 111 centre in very good condition
put it in my VR4 works perfectly. bargain!!

The auction says 5.5kg in weight so chances are he's talking about the mech LSD. BUT, to avoid any hassle, ask first.

Yeah you wouldn't just install this without pressing on some new bearings.
There's your part number right there: You need 2 x NSK 30207J bearings (Mitsu Part No: MB393957)

He mentions the rust in the ad, looks like surface rust, could it be an issue?
Also, I'd need to put the pinion wheel onto the LSD and get all the clearances done correctly wouldnt I?

I've had plenty of CIG lockers, it's all about how you drive them, you either commit to the corner or end up on the footpath. I found it easier to handle and liked the way the cars drove, but that's just my opinion.

I had 13b PP with and unsprung brass puck clutch and a welded hilux diff, it then turned into my Wife's DD, ended up being her favourite car.

locker is fine on a rwd, not so user friendly on awd.

I have a mint mechanical lsd centre that I may part with

Just a quick question, if you put an LSD center (either Evo or the kaaz ones that pop up regularly) into an open GSR diff, can you use the standard CV cups & driveshafts, or do you need to source LSD shafts?

Standard CV cups and shafts is all that you need for the mechanical front LSD and the mechanical rear LSD centres.
