I see a pretty cool oscilloscope on the shelf there.
Brians laptop looks like a sewing machine. Probably suit him better too. Cant sew sequins on his shirt with a laptop...
As for the cat, im going to lure the neighbours tomcat (that is pissing on everything) and bundle them back to brian, as im sure he will have a use for them both.

Is the thing on the shelf closer to the camera a frequency generator? Same make as the oscilloscope?

Yea, probably will get that one. I just listed them price+post, was down to $40ish. I have a few pwm modules, if I fed them 5v I should get 5v p2p square wave.
At the moment its just to simulate a cranking engine for ecu diagnosis. But I do a bit of amplifier repairs, and so will get used. (Probably more than the lathe does)
