so i've been noticing a knocking sound in the front end when i drive over bumps (ones that one affect 1 tire at a time) and rough pavement at low speeds(5-30 km/h) i know its a bushing, but i don't know which one, becuase they all look ok. Any ideas?

When you get time and get the car up on a hoist preferred you will need in inspect each bush and manually see if there's any movement in sway links also

suspension tops are loose..
tighten them up with a socket.
that was my exact problem and my exact repair..
their was play between the bolt and the bit which sits over the spring.

that's exactly what i was thinking, where can you get new pillow balls?
I'm guessing here so research your own but if the eclipse has 2x bolt top hat get those locally or you would definitely find another DSM model with same top hats.

this is a pic of the top of my shock mount, i tried tightening the bolt, but all it did was turn and i heard the spring torque up. And these rubber top hats are they under this mount between the spring and mount?

OK youve got Cusco coil overs either replace with another suitable hat from another brand or try ordering off Cusco distrubutor in Canada.

Some nice Pillowball top hats will solve this.

Until that wears and it sounds like someone is hammering your engine bay at every bump.Still, more precise item than rubber.

and by the look of it your cuscos are pillowball/hyme joint tops...no rubber. If they are no good, take the bearing out and take it to a bearing place and have them size one up for you, there will be something you can use, they will be a standard size spherical bearing...unless they are like my zeals and were made to custom dimensions, by zeal, purely as a money making marketing ploy.

I'd be lookng at your sway bar links and D-Bushes first.
P.s anything from cc Lancer should fit into the front of your evo.
ie..top plates etc.

Ya it sounds like someone hammering in the engine bay. How do you take them out? same as what the evo 1-3 manuals do on stock ones?

Ok youre gonna have to sort a few things out.

I went through hell and back over my coilovers and learnt a shitload in the process.

You have to workout
1. Is it the shocks or not
2.If it is the shocks...is it the camber plate bearings in the top hats or is it an internal noise.

I say this because..its alot easier to take your car and have it inspected for worn bushes and have it fixed up (if that is the problem) than it is to go pulling struts out (and apart)

You can find out yourself if it is the shocks.
A small test is, get someone to stand on your radiator support panel (carefully) and rock up and down,(it sounds crude but it works and theyre probably too stiff to push up and down by hand) watch the bearings in the top hats, the centre of the bearing should not move up and down inside the outer. If it is then it is worn and you will likely hear it knocking.

Look here to get an idea of what im talking about

You can see the spherical bearing in the centre, that inner steel piece of the bearing shouldnt move up and down.

The other thing it could be is the internal gas level of the shock could be very low and they can cavitate and knock..My zeals were a monotube case with no floating piston for gas seperation it was all mixed together, they were supposed to have 12 bar in them, the clowns that rebuilt them put 12 psi in them, which cause pockets of air in the oil and the piston would hammer on the oil as it travelled through pockets of air and bang loudly, its alot less likely that this is your problem though. This only happened when the shock extended/wheel dropped over small short drops, like where road surfaces meet

here is what i've observed. when i first get in my car in the morning, the car does'nt make the knocking sound. as i drive for 20km+ the knocking sound becomes apparent, and it sounds like it only comes from the drivers side.

Take it to someone who knows what they're doing with suspension- they'll diagnose the problem immediately

Well done..that deff looks like the bearing, its not uncommon..

Take the top hat off the strut and get the top hat by itself, the bearing can be knocked out from the bottom..as i said, it should be an off the shelf part, hopefully, and when u get new ones, grease them heavily with a high E.P grease, like shell alvania EP (LF) or something simmilar.
