How exactally does one get a lightened flywheel, does the place that would normally just skim a little to give a flat surface just take heaps off (other areas, back, edges etc) then rebalance or are these a custom made only item?

they can be machined down to be lighter,
but you are weakening the flywheel itself and running the risk
of it failing.
if you did decide to get it machined down dont go to silly.
the best option is a new light flywheel from exedy etc...
