Has anybody seen or have one? Mechanical Cam Belt Tensioner?

I'm in the middle of a serious rebuild (2.4ltr) and I'm not sure what to do? I can naturally just purchase a new one!(hydrolic) or replace with a mechanical, but i wanted to see one first! Priceing is about $220 for mech. one but they don't have one so they will modify mine for $150

what to do?

if anyone has one can they (not likely) take a picture or tell me where i could get one.

naturally I need one ASAP, be it hydrolic or mechanical

I'm using a mechanical belt tensioner on my 2.3 4G63. Speak to John Hill at JHH Racing in Qld, he made mine up. If you run with a mechanical tensioner you will need your e-centric tensioner pulley modified too. John did this for me as well. I sent him my hydraulic tensioner and pulley and he modified them for me and sent them back. Cost me about $200 for the lot.

tensioner

Would be keen on info on this aswell. I too have issues with my belt being over tight in the mornings and loose after about half hour of driving. Would like to see exactly what get's modified to make it mechanical though.

From what i know the main shaft that pushes against the tensioner bearing, so I would imagine it is removed and a bolt is threaded into its place with a locking nut to keep it in place. Like at normal belt tensioner for P/S or A/C

Troy, I think I have a spare dead one if you want to play with that.

Why would they need to modify the ecentric idler bearing though?

Does having a mechanical tensioner mean that it would be part of your routine maintenance to check the timing belt tension all the time though?

aparently the VR4 ecentric idler bearing adjusts the opposite way to the nut tightening, So it has the ablility to loosen itself as the belt streches.

The Evo's go the other way.

I gave JHH mine this morning to modify $150 can't complain

aparently the 4G63 are nortorious for bad tensioners, Thats why the recommend replacing them when you replace the belt.

Just what I've heard.

I have a billet mechanical tensioner for my car, cost me about $250, very happy with it. Bought it through Tuned Automotive in Brisbane
