Driving down the motorway today on the way home from dropping off the Mrs in the city.. Was a 100 zone, and when coming up to 100 under acceleration, bang...

Fiberglass bonnet fly's up and smashed the shit out of the windscreen.. Luckily it was on a straight stretch.. And as I was in the lane closest to the medium strip, I managed to stay straight and not hit anything..

So got out, pulled down the hood, and checked to make sure it was secure... So then drove the rest of the way home.. Just as I turned off the motorway, I started to get tailed by a cop.. And thought, here we go... But he tailed me most of the way home, and left me alone...

So get home, have a look, and well the f/g bonnet is fuxtored... The roof also has 3 dents from the vents in the hood.. The windscreen wipes are fuxtored, and took most of the hit, the windscreen is all shattered.. There was even some glass that blew in over the passenger side, where the wipes has almost come through the glass.. And the black plastic bit where the wipers are is destroyed also...

This is going to cost a bit to fix... Kills me!!

Anyway, I am just really cut.. This is killing me.. I almost cried.. Have spent so much time and money on this car... I am in pain.. I can't bare to look @ her...

wtf?? That sucks! Lucky you were able to pull the car up without hitting another car/thing etc etc. How did the bonnet come loose in the 1st place?

good excuse to get an aluminum one now though (on the bright side)~! :)

I have most of those bits for fixing it if that helps at all, wipers, plastic trim etc.
but yeah sux that it has managed to come loose...

Damn dude that sux- nothing worse than a bonnet flying up- happened to me once on a shitbox, its pretty scary stuff

Yeah thanks guys.. Shocked the shit out of me.. The reason it came up, is that the latch is all f/g.. The little hood part that is meant to catch on the metal clasp was defective.. There was a chunk taken out of it, so when the hook is meant to dig in, well it didn't..

I actually had the car booked in to get some work done on it, and was going to rivet in the metal piece.. But yeah too late I guess..

same thing happened on my cc gsr like 4 months ago. lucky i was pretty close too a mates place

Interesting to see how common this is.. Did'you cop any roof damage???

Was never a fan of the look of bonnet pins though.. Had thought of it, but as this is the first time that something like this had happened, well I honestly thought pins were overkill..

I have a carbon hood on the FTO, and am thinking maybe pins will be the way to go..

Get muscle car pins, not tuner car pins. They cut into the bonnet and sit flush.

XW GT / XY GT / etc

Thing is you'll need a panelbeater to fit them becuase your bonnet needs paintwork after. But they look shitloads better.

yer about 3quarters of the roof was caved in the fibreglass bonnet was smashed windscreen was smashed i think it ended up costing me about 2.5k all up

You should sell me your Evo 6 seats to help cover the cost of repairs!
sorry dude I couldn't help myself. lol.

Heheh.. I would say the same to anyone else that this happened to also.. Lol ...

But yeah, I got away quite well.. Mechanic was surprised that the damage was small.. So yeah picked up the new alloy bonnet today... In top nick too... So spoke to the panel beater, and he seems to not be phased by the roof.. He was more worried about the new bonnet..

So the next question, is should I worry about bonnet pins now... Or is it overkill?

I may get a set of those aerocatch ones for the FTO's carbon fibre bonnet though.. I saw a set today on a civic, and they looked pretty good.. Sit nice and flush.. But I would get the ones with the lock...

This happened to me when I had an accident about 2 months ago, had slight accident, the latch came up (didnt notice), driving to panel beaters, got to 80kms and the bonnent lifted up, smashed windscreen, bent bonnent hinges, and one wiper arm, scratched rain scattle/plastic part. Was gay, but was a learning experience...
