Okay, so this has been happening for a while. When I'm hard on boost, revving fairly high, I can hear a noise that sounds like dirt flicking up around my wheels. Dirt? no...it only happens every time I boot it. it also sounds like it's coming from the turbo or somewhere in the engine. sounds like a light tapping noise of something moving fast.

And its not my lifters, they're already noisy every now and then :(

speaking of lifters, how much does it cost to replace them? or is it worth just blowing up my engine (obviously not on purpose) and rebuilding it that way?

excuse my bad english, my fingers are frozen

Why does everyone thinik its necessary to change their lifters?

An upper cylinder lubricant like Pro-Ma MBL8 works a treat, and costs S.F.A!

because the lifter itself actually wears down over time...

i think dre is referring to that even if you do replace them, there's a high chance the noise will come back even if they are new lifters..

yea sorry, i failed school, cant spell for shit and i dont think anyone knew what i was meaning either.

cheers for the spell correction post  maybe next time i might ad something useful to a thread...

yeah I actually thought it could be pinging, but its been happening since i first got it and apc didn't notice it as far as i know. Anyway, I'll take it down to a different shop and get em to check it out. what is this substance you speak of to stop the lifter noise? i'll have a look around for this...Pro-Ma MBL8...

I didn't want to mention pinging because if i had everyone would jump to the conclusion that it was what was happening. It doesn't sound like marbles in a tin, it sounds more like a few grains of sand in a tin....argh crap my cars pinging. lol. better start saving!

You could try the following:
- turn the boost do as far as it will go,
- run it down to near empty and put some shell 100 octane in it,
- knock a couple of degrees off your base timing.

If any of the above stop the alleged pinging, then you know that it definately was detonation and can have it retuned to fix it.

If the above do not stop it, then its a good chance its not pinging and you will have to look elsewhere.

Okay I can't do the timing thing myself so I'll leave that to a mechanic. I've got a feeling my cars had a bad tune (gee gee apc) so we'll see what happens. it's booked in next week to be looked at.

Any excessive shaft play/signs of the compressor wheel being dodgy or scraping the inside of the comp housing? could be turbo wear...

YES! exactly what you said, is what I think it is. It doesn't sound like it's coming from the actual engine but somewere in there (although I could be wrong). I gave it a massive rev while out of gear, and the noise wasn't there. A stupid indicator but in neutral it doesn't go on boost much, as u would know. the noise is not there...I'm guessing its my turbo. If it is, a perfect excuse to get a slightly bigger one. I've got a Td0516g atm, so I'll go slightly bigger, since I'm broke and all. lol.

If you want, I live at Joyner and will be home all weekend, you are welcome to pop around and we'll see if we can determine for sure what the noise it. And it won't cost you a cent.

If you could do that with me that would be awesome. I'm a little short on cash these days...bit of debt, you know? haha. Hows sunday sound? I'm playing at a party on saturday night so i'll be busy all day...

argh I totally forgot.

You know, the noise has gone :\ maybe it was actually just dirt :| the only variable that has changed is the rain...
