Hello,

My name is Kyle, I am from Canada. I just purchased a 1992 Mitsubishi Lancer GSR from Japan and it arrived in Canada yesterday. I am going to pick it up in about 3 days once it passes through customs.

I am looking for the following info:

- Best oil to use (engine, tranny, etc)
- Best spark plugs (car is 100% stock, looking for NGK plugs)
- Evo 1 repair manual, service manual
- What are some problem areas I should check?
- Where can I get aftermarket parts?
- Anything else you can think of!

Thanks!

Regards,
Kyle

iv always put motul turbolight 4100 in mine only coz the lifters were getting a tad noisey.but when the new engine is built ill be going castrol edge.for the gearbox and transfer case i put in castrol SYNTRANS some of the mitsu ppl are putting that stuff in.as for spark plugs and that the tuner usally handles all that stuff

You have a PM

Best oil; Amsoil, or royal purple for engine, redline mtx 90 (i believe) and your differential depends on whether it's still stock or aftermarket

evo1 repair manual is downloadable from this forum
check all your rubber parts (timing belts, cv boots, steering rack boots, crankshaft pulley)

aftermarket parts are mostly located from UK and Australia but there are some from the states (some talon and eclipse parts are interchangable)

ask questions and read the forums ;)

Hi Kyle & welcome to Team4g! (I'm fairly new here as wel)

If you don't mind my asking, how much did you purchase the car for?

As far as oil, I had all mine changed with redline oil (engine, tranny, etc). 10w40 for the motor (if your car has excess of 80k), and used the heavy gear oil for the tranny. If not redline, go with AMSoil.

I have NGK spark plugs on my engine.

Problem areas: Roof/rib rust. Also do standard compression checks, etc.

Depending on which province you register it... you might have a hell of a time getting it registered.

DRL is a -must-. I think garages charge upwards to $100-130 for DRL. Which you could do it yourself for like $10 (like I did)

When getting the OOP done, take it to a place that has done numerous JDM vehicles before. As the mistake I first made was, I took it to a place that was referred to me but didn't have experience with JDM cars. Short story, know your car, I had the mechanic fail the car because there was no cat on it (there is one on stock, and mine was completely untouched), he also might of had a grudge against JDM cars because he took off my spark plug wires and put them on incorrectly (wrong order) causing the engine to misfire and in result burning my wires.

Lets just say if I ever catch that mechanic in a back alley at night... somebody isn't walking out of that alley....

Thanks for the info.

Frost, I shouldn't have a problem registering it. I have other imports including a Skyline, and have passed safety first time everytime with $20 worth of parts.

Currently the car has 84,000 km's on the odometer and the car is 100% stock, even the original wheels.

When I go to Vancouver to pick it up I will be changing the spark plugs, and the oil before doing the 1700km drive home. Still unsure of which spark plugs to use (heat range, gap, etc).

Thanks!

Regards,
Kyle

I'd go for a '7' heat range, even on a barely modified turbo car.

Engine Oil: Motul 300v
Gearbox oil: Redline MTL

The car is similar to a 2G DSM (only better built) so a lot of off the shelf DSM aftermarket bits will fit.

Most common problems...

- Crank Angle Sensor failing.
- Idle speed control motor failing.
- Master and Slave cyclinders leak/fail.
- Window Regluators getting caught/jammed.
- Possible roof rust.
- Heat resistor failing, so that the first and second position on the fan control do not work. 3rd and full speed work fine.

Cant really think of much more to be honest. The oil does leak a bit out of the oil cap and done the rocker cover, which is normal.

That's only normal if you don't replace the oil cap rubber seal, it normally comes with a rocker cover gasket kit.

I agree completely.
