Hey everyone,

I'll be perfectly honest, I'm a 'newbie.' I've only dealth with N/A cars prior to this evo 1, but am trying to take in as much information as possible and am seeking some help:

(questions pertain to an Evo 1 GSR)

1) I've been looking over some "Coil on Plug Kit"'s on ebay, but am wondering if there is any advantage to such a kit vs. your normal spark plug? I currently have NGK racing spark plugs & NGK racing spark cables.

2) What is the most cost effective boost controller. Is turbotech the best cost effective choice? What about other ebay knock-offs which go for even less?

3) Boost Gauges - With boost controllers in mind, I currently have no boost gauge. I have what looks to be gauge mount hardware attached in front of my gauge cluster on my steering rack. What's a good cheap 32-40mm boost gauge? Also, is an air/fuel gauge necessary?

4) I've noticed that when water enters through my bonnet, it collects in the battery terminal holder. I've thought about getting a different holder, or moving the battery to the trunk. Does anyone have a write-up for how to route the battery to the trunk? or a cheap "slim battery" holder/tiedown?

5) Catch-Can's. I don't have a catchcan in my car, but I notice that many other users do. Is this something beneficial to have? If I plan on using my car for rally, is this something I should get? Any info on them would be appreciated.

6) BOV/BPV's. Is it reccomended to stay with the stock BPV? I've been tempted to pick up something like an HKS SSQV w/ recirculation kit... simply for the sound. Is this a bad idea? Are there any reccomendations for aftermarket "plumbed"/recirculated BOV's?

I'll add more questions to the list when I can remember what they were. This'll do it for now :D .

Many thanks!

aiight,
ill try give u a noobie to noobie reply :)

1) not really any benefit for what u want to achieve.
2) a manual turbosmart u can pick up for about $40 on ebay which is definitely the most accurate, and cost effective.
3) any half decent boost gauge. autometer is one of the best and not too bad priced. just dont go a cheapo one and u'll be fine
4) theres heaps of info about relocating your battery to the boot, not too dificult - use search function
5) catch can's are good. Their pretty cheap, so there is no harm in installing one, it'll just mean ure clearing a bit of excess from ur engine.
6) get rid of the stocker, get a decent plumb back if u want performance, evo 8MR is recommended, otherwise any aftermarket would do fine, once again dont go a cheapo.

Great, thanks to everyone for the detailed info!

As for the catch can, is it something of a performance/helper? It doesn't hinder performance in any way does it? Just want to double check on that.

Thanks,

I did infact read that and am about to buy it, but it didn't exactly give the newbie answer I was looking for. I'll assume then that it's a "yes, it's a good thing."

hehehehe - I looked at that web link for the catch can and I first thought the coke-can was a cheaper option they were trying to flog! :D

* imagine - "Could I have a catch can (get it - CAN!) in the Sprite option?" *

(I'm tired so excuse the poor humour)

A coke can's a bit on the small side - I've seen plenty of cars using coke bottles though and a 9sec GTR in japan with some sort of fuel additive bottle.

Personally I've got a 1L castrol oil container - it's even got a level window on the side
