my one which uses a socket wrench looks similar to that but doesnt make it due to no room (dump pipe /exhaust)

Good point... actually we cant use that 1 on the GSR motor coz of the custom dump and the minimal room to play with

arent oil filters only meant to be on hand tight?

its for getting them off mate

I think he was referring to that they should be easy to remove, as they're supposed to be on till they touch, then 3/4 turn. I've never had a problem removing the filter... worst case i used one of those dodgy strap wrenches and had no issues....

Same here, i follow the direction on the oil filter and i've never had a problem, only time was when i has a lube shop do my oil, they overtightened it, but i few extra grunts and i got it with my hands. Although my hands are like vise grips from being an oil rig worker LOL

off topic but a similar issue... took my car in for a service (just after the engine conversion was done) at what was suppose to be one of Perth's mitsubishi specialists so that they could take a look over the conversion... i remember walking up to the workshop and hearing an aweful noise, which turned out to be my car and some very chattery lifters... crap oil and the 4g93t lifters done go well together

long story short the next day i decided to change the oil to something synthetic and decent, but after trying my hand/sandpaper combo, an old style filter wrench, and then a filter strap i was gobsmacked that this thing wouldnt budge  called over a mate whom was a diesel mechanic as i was confident that i was doing something wrong and thats when i learnt the screwdriver trick... upon inspecting the filter i notice a few fine metal coils/shavings... it was too hard to tell whether this was from the filter itself of the filter housing

Yeah one hammer + one screwdriver in the corner of the direction you want to loosen it up is pretty much the way I've been taking them off 4G93's with very close dump pipes for a while. Sometimes the screwdriver goes through the filter and makes a mess but you get that  then you either start a new point of contact or whack the screwdriver right through til it comes out the other end and then turn it anticlockwise. I reckon after being so close to the high temps of the dump pipe it expands the metal more which makes the thing harder to get off. Removing the filter when the engine oil is dead cold might make them easier to remove, but in my experience I dont even bother hand removing them anymore and reach straight for the hammer, screwdriver and oil pan
