Developed a problem last week with no crunches, bangs or hard driving involved...Just couldnt get 5th or reverse gears one day last week??

A mate of mine has a gearbox shop as a family buisness, so I took it in for his dad to have a look at it and hopefully diagnose the problem. He removed the front cover of the box on drivers side, to ensure the roll pin? hadnt broken on the outer side..nope- still intact?
It was suggested that posssibly the roll pin? on the inside of the box had sheared??

So i spent 4 hours on Saturday just gone, removing the box..Today the box has been dismantled on the bench and for some reason now selects 5th and reverse without a thing being touched??:eek:

Have checked the shifter linkages on the car and it goes into both gears now too??

Anyone have any ideas/pointers/things to check before i put it back in...Dont really want to put it all back in and be back to where i started from again!!

Shift cables etc all in good working order?

that would of been my first line of thinking.. check the cables check the brackets and check the pins that hold it down. Evn check the shifter cable cos if it has excessive play it wont engage those gears either!

IMHO 90% of 5th/reverse problems are shifter related.

could go as far as clutch..or pivot ball on your clutch fork or clutch fork? need to check all areas

Wouldnt i have problems with other gears if either one of these was the problem? All other gears selected smooth as and car drove perfectly.......

I had the same problem. Pushed it out and went for a spin and it was all good.

I was thinking maybe it was just stuck on something.

Fark thats gotta suk BIG time.
On the bright side, its time for a new clutch and lightened flywheel whilst its out yeah? lol

Already did the new clutch and flywheel thing when I did the conversion!!
Im hoping that it was something that somehow was stuck!! Gonna suck to put it all back in and still have dramas!!

That's the price you pay for playing with cars :)

^unfortunately so!!
I'm just lucky I have such a good mate to let me use their workshop/hoist for the week and not charge me!! Otherwise I'd be screwed and doing it on the driveway!!

few things to try if you ever get it again. try turning the car off, selecting the said gear with the engine off and foot on the clutch, they try and start it and see if its selected, can help tell you if its a selector problem in the box itself (sometimes clutch issue also, which can be worse on 5th and rev due to where they are located and selected). if that dont work, turn car off, disconnect shifter cables and see if you can select gears manually at the shifter linkages them selves, if still not sure if the engage you can turn car on with clutch and see if it is in the right gears. these help to narrow down what can be many issues.

hi im new to this site own a gsr. anyway can i sugest somthing try checking you gearbox mount (rear) its pretty common when you cannot select 5th and reverse geasrs because thay take a longer stroke to get them in thats why you can still select all the other gears they take sorter distence to select. thats why you could get select all gears when you had the box out .check them out and see how you go.

if you get it again, then try removing the shifter cables and selecting it manually at the selectors on the box. it pretty much out rules anything out of the box then. something getting stuck inside the box.

Finally found what we think!! is the problem....The Interlocking mechanism!! It seems to be sticking a little..as i stated in an earlier post- the box while siting on the bench will now select 5th and reverse- so ive definately eliminated it being a cable related issue.... as these were all recently replaced...Ive added a picture or two to show the bit thats sticking

its the black rod and assosciated bits, thats on the end of the selectors

ordered a new one- will fit when it arrives and go from there!!

check and see if the whole interlock mech moves?
the bolt gives it a linear axis while also stopping it from twisting.

there isn't a lot of space in there to move so things have to be lined up pretty close.
so would it select the gear or just "not go in" like the gate was closed

if it would not select you are on the right path. if it would select but no drive you have other issues
