i did a 14 dollar pedders check and they said my front shocks are borderline...

they said in order to fix it, it will cost me 836 or something like that, including bushes and shocks and labor, is this right??

anyone know where i can get cheap shocks rather then spend that much, i dont have the money to spend 800 odd dollars on shocks ...

thanks

what sort of shocks are they supplying?, which bushes are they replacing,

might be cheaper for just shocks but it sounds like you

might need the other things too.

depending on the shocks price might be ok

Ask them which shocks they are supplying, but I don't even think there are shocks in the Pedders range that would cost that much.

As I said in another post you can get KYB shocks for around $300 a pair then fitting may be an hour or so labour cost ($60-$100) which you can save if you are handy with a spanner.

That price hopefully includes a wheel alignment so there is another $75

Also which exact bushes did they say they will be replacing?

KYB is available through Repco.

well apparently, he said if it was just a normal lancer, it would be about 100 bucks, but coz its a gsr turbo etc etc so forth...

the things that need replacing are - lower bushes (FRT + RR worn) and the upper bushes they will recheck when apart...

Front shocks are border line... rear shocks also border line..

prices are as listed: front shocks $384

lower bushes: $143

labour: $220

which brings the total to $857...

i was thinking, spending that much money on just front shocks is pretty steep...

are the kyb's adjustable??

CVAP has rear apexi adjustable ones for 600, and if i can get front ones for around that price, it'd be pretty good as opposed to pedders...

is it bad to have apexi reaers and say a different brand fronts??

Thanks guys.. bit of a lengthy post :D

That price sounds right for the Pedders shocks. They are a good shock (made in Belgium).

The KYB shocks I spoke about are not adjustable, they are a direct replacement for the standard shocks with a slightly uprated valving, so they are stiffer than the original items. Still a top quality item, just not for extreme performance, but neither is the pedders item.

He is right about the GSR having different parts to the other CC Lancer vehicles, but the rear shocks are shared by the GSR, CC Sedan and Coupe. I still don't think you can get a pair of front shocks + or - fitting for $100.

The front wishbones rear bush costs $70 a pair for anti-lift kit bushes, and the front bush is proably much the same so that price sounds right of $143 for the 4 bushes. Ask them about getting the Whiteline anti-lift kit bush instead of the standard bush (#KCA317A part number)

I would also ask about the front swaybar end bushes, they are like $30 for the kit.

If the rear Apexi shocks are $600, the fronts are likely to be similar or more, and they are likely to be just a tube that needs to be inserted into the original strut (= more $$$) If you want adjustable shocks at the low end of the price range look at Koni they will be around the $400-$500 a pair.

Although still expensive you don't need to replace them as often. You can wind them up every 30 - 40 000km and compensate for the wear in the valves, compared to a normal shock that needs replacing every 40 000. You can wind the Koni shocks up about 4 or 5 times until they need rebuilding, which is still cheaper than new shocks.

It will be bad to have different 'rated' front and rear shocks. If the rears are Apexi and the front Pedders or KYB that will be bad as the rear will be a lot stiffer than the front = more oversteer which can sometimes just snap especially in the wet, dangerous if you don't expect it/know what you are doing.

Its not just front shocks they quoted you on, its almost all the front suspension bits that are necessary to remove the clunk you mentioned and are likely to be worn. Sure 3.5-4hrs labour may be a lot, but thats what they charge.

dont listen to pedders

theyre scumbags.......................

theyre only trying to scam you into making money. go somewhere else!

Whilst my Koni's are Ok, and are not quite as stiff as I might have hoped, I have to admit, the service at Toperformance in Vermont is excellent. THey don't try to "sell" you anything, but do offer decent advice. I would look at the Yellow Koni's, not cheap, but probably stiffer than my red ones ( i think they are also adjustable)

I am not a huge fan of the idea of a free (or almost) shock assessments: they are probably a bit like the Brakes plus brake inspections: destined to result in a suggestion for new rotors and their special pads that never wear out (and wear out your rotors instead).

Perhaps they are being honest, but its difficult to know when they only offer you their product.

I must admit I know a few guys that have had their cars there at some point and every single one had the inspection done and every time the quote was over $1000 and one of the cars was almost brand new....

I am sure they get their money's worth for the $14 they charge...

Ive dealt with pedders three times...

and

Been told utter shit three times..

I did my own research and ended up doing it myself for a fraction of the price,im not bagging them, this is my actual experience witht them,i wouldnt bother with them again.

At the time i had my problems witht them, theyre shock absorbers were re-branded Monroe Sensatracs..which are garbage..they are the worst shock you could possibly use with a lowered spring..(and there is a design reason for this) and they were not producing or making theyre own springs,King Springs were making them for them.
The only quality product i know of that they offer are DMS coilovers, made by Drummond Motor Sports,a kit will cost you near on $4000 though..very expensive...but ive been told theyre excellent.
Drummond Motor Sports make alot of products for Pedders,or at least they were a few years back, theyre products are apparently really good but as far as off the shelf pedders stuff.. its garbage and all the technicians i have dealt with have been either
-Not willing to help me.
-Not known the info i have wanted
-Done the work and it looked like a 6 yr old did it.
-Had no knowledge on the matter ive asked

Apart from that i have read much about the financial turmoil the company has bestowed upon small franchise owners..which in total gives me enough reasons not to go to them.
There was a site.
www.fukron.au.tt/
i think its been removed,it had the whole story on it.
