RVR Serviced, Timing Belt Loose??

Loose timing belt??

Had a look at the belt after driving round for a while and found I can easily move the belt up and down about 2cm (with not much finger pressure) between the cam sprockets

This doesnt seem right

I can slide it sideways on the sprockets too

:unsure::huh::unsure:

Hmmm not necessarily. The belt in between the cam sprockets can be a bit loose due to belt stretch, but as long as the belt on the entry and exit to the cam sprockets is still tight then its not the auto tensioner. Needless to say go back to whomever installed the timing belt and get them to rectify/replace it as 2cm is a fair bit of play and your engine is at risk of timing belt failure.

A good timing belt is SOOOOOOOOOO important on our engines that people overlook spending the bit extra $$ for a good one. Dont get a cheap aftermarket belt or you'll be sorry when the belt stretches. I've seen it happen to a couple of Dayco belts I've installed on 4G63T engines after a short period of driving and thats why I wont use Dayco timing belts on modded 4G63T's anymore. Genuine Mitsu or Gates timing belts are way better.

Genuine Mitsubishi belt, new after market tensioner. Checked again and it was tighter. It seems to vary depending on where the engine stops. I will keep a very close eye on it

you have turned the tensioner offset the right way
if not it will still fit but you will run out of tension its easy to overlook that as it does seem to work both ways

Now it smokes! Paranoia sets in!

After being slightly over filled (according to the dipstick) smoke issued forth from the exhaust on acceleration (but not while running) Oil level lowered and this seemed to fix it BUT after idling in a car park (coming down the ramp) for quite a long time HUGE amounts of smoke on acceleration which cleared after a while. This was first time in city traffic. Any explanations for this? (DoomMachine's RVR doesn't do this)

Im with Liberoz with this one , ive done a few 63dohc belts over the years ( ex mitsu mechanic ) the tensioner is critical, and if you find that it is tight in some rotations and loose in others it means the valve spring pressure is forcing the cam in its natural direction thus unloading the weakened hydraulic tensioner , its either soon to fail also if you adjusted tensioner the wrong way- you can actually have a short position and a long postion - the long is the easiest to do when you dont have the proper tensioner tool - but it causes more leverage on the pivot point thus unloading tensioner pressure not good if you like to spin past 6500rpm
